Sir Harrison Birtwistle

Birtwistle studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music, where he became interested in contemporary and medieval music. He was appointed the director of the National Theatre in 1975. Influenced by Stravinsky, Varese and Webern, Birtwistle's early works are ritualistic, often dealing with the myths of birth, death and regeneration. During the 1970s he turned to working on musical blocks that evolve over time. The Triumph of Time (1972), is an example of this type of work. ~ Lynn Vought, Rovi
