peas (just hold the salt). Recall his story? The modern R&B maestro's 2003 album Comin' from Where I'm From introduced his gritty vocal delivery to millions, so where he's currently at is a good place indeed. The new Ain't Nobody Worryin' boasts more mentions barbeque, but balances the good time talk with some fretful feelings about the ills of American culture. It's the sound of a thoughtful singer who has discovered who we wants to be artistically. Hamilton recently told VH1 about the importance of Jodeci, sex music, and chill head gear.

He's Big On Jodeci
If my record collection was stolen, I'd have to get my Jodeci back. They had the whole bad boy/church boy/I'm-in-love-now-who-cares image. This was back when I was in high school, and they sang about teenage love and rebellion. They came off like an R&B group, but with a rock image. They were dangerous -- like you might hear them curse.

He Once Chose Rap Over Soul.
Fat Boys and Run-D.M.C. were my favorite rap groups back in the day. I was a Fat Boy fanatic, beat-boxing and all that stuff. I would wake people up in the morning 'cause I had listened to their albums so loud. Rap helped make me. I would get my little 20 dollar allowance, and records were like six or seven dollars. I bought it all: Beastie Boys, Whodini ... even MC Hammer.

A Menu Can Trigger Memories.
You can't truly enjoy anybody's company if your stomach is growling. Certain foods remind me of certain things growing up. I knew if it was cold and rainy that my mom was gonna have the little green peas, mashed potatoes and chicken. If it got real cold, there was gonna be homemade soup. You feel love when you get soup. It's like an internal blanket. One time, when all the power went out in my house, they found a way to cook white rice and white potatoes and fried ribs. That was one of my favorite poor time meals.

He Loves His Hats.
My hats would get compliments, so it was like, "Wow, I really love 'em." At one point in time, I couldn't find any that fit me. But I guess my head grew bigger or something. Hats compliment how I'm feeling. I can be dressed up and not really wanna be totally dressed up, so I'll put on a hat to tone it down. It starts growing and growing. Next thing you know, you can't get in the closet.

His First CD Led To A Baby Boom.
People tell me they conceived children to Comin' From Where I'm From. I told them the second one's not gonna come with condoms either, so you better be careful. It means a lot. It means I'm putting out the right energy. It's always good when you have families being created.

He Recently Got Married.
My wedding was small, in an old chapel in downtown Charlotte. We were gonna have no more than 25 of my family members and maybe 20 of hers. We kinda did it real quiet, no publicity, no entertainers, no hoopla. No whole bunch of dangling chandeliers, simple and clean. I didn't wear a hat. Hey, I got a nice grade under here -- it shines pretty well with a little Vaseline.

You Gotta Pay Some Dues To Sing The Blues.
I had experienced things [early on], but nothing really significant to put any real pain in my spirit. Then I lost my stepmother and some friends and experienced heartbreak. I now have more substance and more added emotions to my voice. Even then I had been blessed with nice penmanship, but I'm even stronger as a songwriter now, too. I know who I am now, musically. I know what not to try.

Success = Commitment.
It's not all just you sing, you go to parties, you do videos; it's constant work, grinding. But it's worth it 'cause I love it so much. The passion eases the blow when you're working hard like that. It makes you wanna get up in the morning and go do it again- even if they call you at five or six AM!
