Argentine pianist Martha Argerich breaks into this week's Billboard Top Classical chart at #14 with her collection of works by J.S. Bach. The album begins with
Beethoven's Adagios with performances by pianist Maria-João Pires, cellist Janos Starker and violinist Gidon Kremer debuted this week at #13. The compilation contains excerpts from an array of the composer's works, including piano sonatas, the "Romance for Violin," the "Symphony #9" and the "Mass in C Major." Tenor sensation Andrea Bocelli holds on to the #1 position with his Sacred Arias. The "Fantasia 2000" soundtrack, by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, follows at #2, with spirited performances of works by Stravinsky, Gershwin and Respighi. The soundtrack also includes the perennial favorite "The Sorcerers' Apprentice" by Paul Dukas. The Appalachian Journey of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor retains the #3 slot on the chart. Making up the top 10 are: Bocelli, Sacred Arias, at #1; Chicago Symphony Orchestra, "Fantasia 2000" soundtrack, at #2; Yo-Yo Ma, Meyer and O'Connor, Appalachian Journey, at #3; John Williams, Classic Williams, at #4; Libera, at #5; Harmony, at #6; The Most Relaxing Classical Album in the World, at #7; Andrea Rieu, 100 Years of Strauss, at #8; and Caravan, at #9. Luciano Pavarotti rounds things with Italian Wedding Favorites, at #10. |
