Pianist Chick Corea will make his only U.S. solo performances on a double bill with pianist John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet at New
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones whose new CD Outbound is out on Columbia have added some dates to their summer tour. They'll be in Hampton Beach, N.H., on Aug. 9; Hyannis, Mass., on Aug. 10; Missoula, Mont., on Aug. 29; Boise, Idaho, on Aug. 30; and Bellvue, Colo., on Sept. 1. The others are Soulive, singer Cassandra Wilson, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, the Jazztimes Superband, Spyro Gyra and guitarist Chuck Loeb. The great soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy's first solo concert in the United States at New York's Environ in 1976 will be out next week on the CD Snips, from Jazz Magnet. ... The six-day Eddie Moore Jazz Festival, one of the country's finest boutique jazz affairs meaning quality counts more than quantity gets going Aug. 7 at the Oakland, Calif., jazz club Yoshi's. Acts include Orquesta la Moderna Tradición, Sex Mob, drummer Cindy Blackman Quartet, saxophonist John Tchicai playing with clarinetist Alvin Batiste and Pierre Dorge and the New Jungle Orchestra on different nights and more. Some interesting directions for saxophonist Greg Osby: From Tuesday (Aug. 8) to Aug. 13, he holds court at New York's Village Vanguard with his band, New Directions, featuring saxophonist Mark Shim, bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits. On Sept. 1, Osby hits the opposite coast to join guitarist Henry Kaiser and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith's Yo Miles! band for their gig at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium. This will be the group's third gig at the Fillmore, and each time they tweak the personnel a little, in hopes of finding novel ways of interpreting the numinous funk of mid-'70s Miles Davis. Joining Osby and Smith in the horn section is the magnificent saxophonist John Tchicai; the other new member is guitarist Mike Keneally. Returning from last time are Kaiser, Smith, bassist Michael Manring, organist Tom Coster, guitarist Chris Muir, percussionist Karl Perazzo and drummer Steve Smith. Surprise guests are promised. The band also will check into the studio soon, to record two CDs. ... Violinist Billy Bang and saxophonists Jemeel Moondoc and Andrew Lamb perform for free with their bands at 6 p.m. Friday (Aug. 4) at Von King Park in Brooklyn, N.Y.'s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, courtesy of Arts for Art. The organization, which presents the splendid Vision Festival, plans to host more free concerts through the summer and fall. ... TBA-TV, the broadcast unit of TBA Entertainment Corporation, will air the "Montreaux Festival on Tour" on pay-per-view on Sept. 4 from the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville, Wash. The live broadcast will show performances by singer Al Jarreau, pianist/singer Roberta Flack, pianist Joe Sample, saxophonist David Sanborn and pianist George Duke. The auction lasts until Aug. 18 and is raised in $1,000 increments. Proceeds from the auction go to the Festival's Jazz Education Programs. The great trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, 62, who has rarely performed in the past decade because of personal and health problems, has been making limited forays back to the bandstand. Hubbard is also set to perform Nov. 2 at the San Francisco Jazz Festival's Salute to (drummer) Eddie Marshall. ... Medeski Martin & Wood, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Spearhead and Femi Kuti are among the artists at the Berkshire Mountain Music Festival Aug. 1113. Located at the Butternut Basin Ski Area in Great Barrington, Mass., the event will take place on four outdoor stages as well as in a lodge up on the ski slopes for the late-night acts. HonSaxophone colossus Sonny Rollins, 69, will perform outdoors free on Aug. 5 at Lincoln Center.
