Son by Four were shut out of the Latin Grammy Awards on Wednesday night, but it should come as no small consolation to the Puerto Rico quartet that they return to the top of the Billboard Latin 50 album
chart.
This is the second trip to #1 for Son by Four, the sophomore album for the salsa/R&B singers who Wednesday (Sept. 13) performed their hit "A Puro Dolor (Purest of Pain)" (RealAudio excerpt) and shared the stage with a Spanish-singing *NSync. They were first knocked off their perch by Gloria Estefan, who won a Latin Grammy (along with producer/husband Emilio Estefan Jr.) as director of the video for "No Me Dejes de Querer" (Don't Stop Loving Me).
The Gipsy Kings make a royal debut at #3 with Volare! Very Best of the Gipsy Kings. The Spanish pop-flamenco band adds value to their double-disc hits collection by including a "Spanish mix" of the Eagles' perennial "Hotel California" (RealAudio excerpt of Gipsy King's version).
Estefan's Alma Caribeña Caribbean Soul drops two notches to #5 this week on the album chart, and her current single, "Como Me Duele Perderte" (How It Hurts To Lose You), tops the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks survey. "A Puro Dolor" is #2.
Son by Four were also bested by Guatemala singer Ricardo Arjona, whose Galería Caribe falls to #2 after one week at the top of the album chart. The 18-track CD features two versions of his current single, the #5 "Cuándo," the second being a "versión pop."
Also in the top 10 this week, at #6 is Lo Grande de los Grandes, a tribute to the masters of Mexican ranchera by Pepe Aguilar. A perplexed Aguilar skipped Wednesday's ceremony; the singer said he was confused by a selection process that saw his two-year-old Por Mujeres Como Tú pitted against newer work such as Alejandro Fernández's Mi Verdad, which won the ranchera award. Fernández's current album, Entre tus Brazos, is #19 this week.
Rounding out the Latin 50 top 10 are Los Huracanes del Norte, En Que Trabaja El Muchacho at #4, Thalía, Arrasando at #7; Rocío Dúrcal, Caricias at #8; Marc Anthony, Desde un Principio From the Beginning at #9; and Joan Sebastian, Secreto de Amor at #10.
