It's been 24 years since Don Covay released an album, but the R&B legend returns this week with Adlib, an album that harks back to the classic recordings he did for Atlantic in the 1960s. Also on tap
Covay, who's been living in a rehabilitation facility in Maryland since he suffered a major stroke in 1992, teamed with his longtime friend Jon Tiven who's produced albums for Wilson Pickett and Delbert McClinton, and written songs for Irma Thomas and B.B.King to record the basic tracks of Adlib in three days. Pickett duets with Covay on "Nine Times a Man" and "Three Time Loser," while Ann Peebles takes lead vocals on "Chain of Fools," the Covay song originally made famous by Aretha Franklin (RealAudio excerpt of Aretha Franklin version). Other guests on the album include harmonica player Lee Konitz, guitarist Syl Johnson, keyboardist Paul Shaffer and former Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers, who sings "Mercy Mercy," a Covay-penned number that was a hit for the Rolling Stones in 1965 (RealAudio excerpt of Rolling Stones version). (Click here to read a news story on Covay and Adlib.) Kandi (born Kandi Burruss) and the Atlanta vocal group Xscape caught producer Jermanie Dupri's ear when they played Dupri's birthday party in 1992. The group released three albums, most recently 1998's Traces of My Lipstick. Since leaving Xscape, Kandi has worked as a vocal producer on *NSync's No Strings Attached, and she co-wrote "Bills, Bills, Bills" (RealAudio excerpt) and "Hey Ladies," from Destiny's Child's 1999 smash, The Writing's on the Wall. Hey Kandi features "What I'm Gon' Do To You" (RealAudio excerpt), a funky revenge fantasy that first appeared on the soundtrack to the Martin Lawrence film "Big Momma's House." |
