The money will be used to create at least two new operas or ballets for the next three years and also to start a program to train young artists. The Mariinsky Opera and Ballet of St. Petersburg, Russia, will get $14 million of the gift for co-productions with the Los Angeles Opera. ...

Pianist Peter Serkin will lead the London Sinfonietta at the Carnegie Hall International Festival of Orchestras in March. Serkin is a leading advocate of living contemporary composers, and the diverse program reflects that dedication. The first of two concerts will feature Igor Stravinsky's The Flood and Variations framed by selections by Toru Takemitsu and the New York premiere of Charles Wourinen's Symphony Seven.
