More than 500 people turned out Tuesday (Sept. 19) for saxophonist Stanley Turrentine's funeral in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, where he was born on April 5, 1934. Turrentine died last week in New York after suffering a series of strokes. During the service at Macedonia Baptist Church, Marlene Shaw sang, Barry Harris played piano and Turrentine's quartet of pianist James Williams, guitarist Dave Stryker, drummer Lenny Robinson and bassist Paul Thompson played Turrentine songs, including his big-selling "Sugar." ...

Soprano saxophonist and flutist Jane Bunnett and her eight-piece combo of mostly Cuban jazzers, Spirits of Havana, will perform Sunday (Sept. 24) in Harrisburg, Pa., as part of the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz concert series. Bunnett and the Spirits released the sizzling Ritmo Soul in May. The event, which includes free seminars and workshops for university students and the public, is dedicated to saxophonist Grover Washington Jr., who died last year at the age of 56. In 1999, Washington received the International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame Award at the Pitt Jazz Concert. According to Justin Martin's biography "Greenspan: The Man Behind the Money" (Perseus), due in stores Oct. 1, Federal Reserve board chairman Alan Greenspan, 74, was a jazz saxophonist before he was an economist. Greenspan enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music to become a professional musician but dropped out to tour with the Henry Jerome dance band. After realizing his musical talent was limited, Greenspan left the band and went on to get an undergraduate degree in economics. The rest is financial history. ...

Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy will perform a free concert with students at the New England Conservatory of Music on Sept. 27 in Boston, as part of the Jazz Masters Residency Program.
