Columbia University's radio station WKCR-FM in New York is celebrating John Coltrane's birthday with an all-Trane broadcast from 6 a.m. EDT Saturday (Sept. 22) to 6 p.m. Sept. 24, breaking only for the Detroit
The Universal Music Group, which includes such artists as rapper DMX, rockers U2 and country singer Shania Twain, has signed a deal with digital media firm Loudeye Technologies to digitize its entire catalog of music and videos. The deal, announced Friday (Sept. 22), is intended to allow Universal and companies who license its content to offer digital downloads and streaming versions of its music. ... The famed Dundee Theater in Chicago will reopen as a jazz/comedy club after being closed for one-and-a-half years. The venue had a run of 84 years before shutting down. The new setup will include a studio for video and audio projects. ... Frank Sinatra — Concepts, due from Capitol on Tuesday (Sept. 26), consists of 16 CDs and will retail for $250. The set includes Songs for Swingin' Lovers, Come Dance With Me, In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning With Me and a 96-page booklet with photographs. More than 500 people turned out Tuesday (Sept. 19) for saxophonist Stanley Turrentine's funeral in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, where he was born on April 5, 1934. Turrentine died last week in New York after suffering a series of strokes. During the service at Macedonia Baptist Church, Marlene Shaw sang, Barry Harris played piano and Turrentine's quartet of pianist James Williams, guitarist Dave Stryker, drummer Lenny Robinson and bassist Paul Thompson played Turrentine songs, including his big-selling "Sugar." ... Soprano saxophonist and flutist Jane Bunnett and her eight-piece combo of mostly Cuban jazzers, Spirits of Havana, will perform Sunday (Sept. 24) in Harrisburg, Pa., as part of the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz concert series. Bunnett and the Spirits released the sizzling Ritmo Soul in May. The series will present "A Celebration of Pittsburgh Jazz" with guitarist Joe Negri, Salsamba, drummer Roger Humphries and Trio Grande on Oct. 29, and saxophonist Phil Woods on Nov. 26, among other shows. In 1999, Washington received the International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame Award at the Pitt Jazz Concert. Other performers at this year's concerts include trumpeter Wallace Roney, saxophonist Benny Golson, trombonist Curtis Fuller, guitarist Larry Coryell, bassist John Patitucci, drummer Winard Harper and trumpeter Oscar Brashear. According to Justin Martin's biography "Greenspan: The Man Behind the Money" (Perseus), due in stores Oct. 1, Federal Reserve board chairman Alan Greenspan, 74, was a jazz saxophonist before he was an economist. Greenspan enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music to become a professional musician but dropped out to tour with the Henry Jerome dance band. After realizing his musical talent was limited, Greenspan left the band and went on to get an undergraduate degree in economics. The rest is financial history. ... Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy will perform a free concert with students at the New England Conservatory of Music on Sept. 27 in Boston, as part of the Jazz Masters Residency Program. Lacy also will teach classes at NEC Sept. 25–26. Earlier this month, drummer Rashied Ali taught a master class at the school.
