More than 500 people turned out Tuesday (Sept. 19) for saxophonist Stanley Turrentine's funeral in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, where he was born on April 5, 1934. Turrentine died last week in New York after suffering a series of strokes. According to Justin Martin's biography "Greenspan: The Man Behind the Money" (Perseus), due in stores Oct. 1, Federal Reserve board chairman Alan Greenspan, 74, was a jazz saxophonist before he was an economist. Greenspan enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music to become a professional musician but dropped out to tour with the Henry Jerome dance band. After realizing his musical talent was limited, Greenspan left the band and went on to get an undergraduate degree in economics. The rest is financial history. ...
