Rock en español stars Jaguares, currently touring the United States, have also found time to record four new songs, including a traditional ranchera. Alfonso André told
Sui Generis, the pioneering Rock Argentina duo of Charly García and Nito Mestre, were forced to cancel an appearance Monday night (October 30) at a Buenos Aires Tower Records store after their fans went on a rampage, breaking doors and windows. According to the newspaper Clarín, the band attracted thousands of followers, mostly adolescents, to the launch of Sinfonía Para Adolescentes, the duo's first album of new material since dissolving in September 1975. ... Gloria Trevi, the Mexican pop singer who has been jailed in Brazil pending extradition since January, suffered another blow on Wednesday (Oct. 25) after a 10-hour court appearance by Karola de la Cuesta, a former member of the alleged "clan" of Trevi and her similarly incarcerated ex-manager, Sergio Andrade. According to the Mexico City daily La Jornada, de la Cuesta told a judge in Chihuahua, Mexico, that Trevi and Andrade humiliated and mistreated young women in their care, including her sisters Karla and Katia de la Cuesta, as well as an undisclosed number of babies fathered by Andrade. This follows earlier testimony by Karina Yapor, Tamara and Edith Zuñiga, and Guadalupe and Aline Carrasco, whose parents had placed them in the couple's custody to further their musical careers. ... Actress/singer Jennifer Lopez will portray legendary Mexico painter Frida Kahlo in a biopic for producer Francis Ford Coppola and director Luis Valdez ("La Bamba"). The film, which begins shooting in February, will compete with the already-announced "Frida Kahlo," to be directed by Julie Taymor (Broadway's "The Lion King") and starring Salma Hayek who, unlike the nuyorican Lopez, is from Mexico. Lopez, whose 1999 debut album On the 6 featured a Latin Grammy-nominated duet with Marc Anthony on "No Me Ames" (RealAudio excerpt), will release a follow-up, The Passionate Journey, early next year. ... Puerto Rico salsa legend Héctor Lavoe, who died in 1993 due to complications from AIDS, will be saluted on a tribute album featuring noted rock en español performers collaborating with top salseros. Among those signed on for the album, which will be released on RMM Records, are Los Angeles worldbeat group Ozomatli, who are joined by Johnny Pacheco and Yomo Toro; Andrew Blanco (of New York's neo-salsa King Chango), Toy (Mexico's Control Machete) and Venezuela's Los Amigos Invisibles with Niki Marrero; and Argentina's Illya Kuryaki & the Valderramas with El Canario. Aterciopelados, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and Café Tacuba also are expected to contribute... Orishas, the Europe-based Cuban hip-hop band that mixes beats and rapping with traditional Cuban son and Santeria percussion, will undertake a brief U.S. tour in support of their debut album, A Lo Cubano (In the Cuban Way), which will be released Nov. 14. The group will begin its six-date transcontinental trek on Nov. 17 in Los Angeles, play Nov. 20 and 21 in New York, and wind up Nov. 23 in Miami, Fla. ... Congolese rumba legend Sam Mangwana will undertake a 13-date U.S. tour in support of his new album, Sam Mangwana Sings Dino Vangu. Accompanying Mangwana will be another Congolese veteran, guitarist Papa Noel. The tour opens Thursday (Oct. 26) in Minneapolis, and finishes Nov. 11 in Santa Cruz, Calif. ... Cuban jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, who defected to the United States in 1990, gets the biopic treatment in "For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story," starring Andy Garcia, throughout November on HBO. An accompanying soundtrack album was released Tuesday (Oct. 24). ... Brazilian chanteuse Bebel Gilberto, who reworked samba and bossa nova classics such as "Sem Conten¸ao" (RealAudio excerpt) on her April album, Tanto Tampo, sets off on her second North American tour of the year in November. The 13-date trek begins Nov. 8 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and concludes Nov. 25 in Montreal. ... Puerto Rico's Chayanne walked away as Artist of the Year when the second annual Ritmo Latino Music Awards were presented Oct. 19 in Los Angeles. Countrymen Son by Four were voted Best New Artist and also won Song of the Year for "A Puro Dolor." Maná were named best Male Pop Group, and their MTV Unplugged was deemed Album of the Year. Mexico's Joan Sebastian was given a Lifetime Achievement award, Jaguares headed the Rock en Español category, and Mexican singer/songwriter Ana Gabriel was named Best Female Pop Artist. ... The Miami Reggae Festival is planned for Oct. 29 in Miami.
