LOOK OUT CARLOS, 'N SYNC'S COMING |

Carlos Santana's Supernatural has had a multi-generational zeitgeist to thank for it's proud perch at No. 1 for a good part of last year. But today sees the release of 'N Sync's No Strings Attached to a teen zeitgeist that is
Aqua Aquarius MCA We trust that everyone reading this was on the planet Earth in 1997, and thus recalls the omnipresent, deliciously inane hit single "Barbie Girl." No one, then, should be terribly surprised to hear that Aqua, the Swiss club-pop combine behind the song, has come up with more of the same. Watch out, Eiffel 65! Cat Power The Covers Record Matador Cat Power is mercurial songstress Chan Marshall, who here delivers ghostly, disturbed interpretations of songs by Bob Dylan, Michael Hurley, Moby Grape, Smog and Will Oldham. She also does a couple of her own songs, which while contradicting the title, proves that mercurial is as mercurial does. Fishbone & the Familyhood Nextperience The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx Hollywood Santana has profited from the "get some famous collaborators" strategy, but Fishbone deserves credit for coming with a similar idea before Supernatural hit multi-platinum pay dirt. And no way does Supernatural even come close to the "everybody in the pool" quality of Bone's new record, as the veteran L.A. septet ropes in Gwen Stefani, Flea, George Clinton, and - hold on to those hats, folks - the fabulous Donny Osmond for a freewheeling funk/punk/gospel/metal throwdown. Ice Cube War & Peace Vol. 2: The Peace Disc Best Side/Priority On his new single with Bone Thug Krayzie Bone, Ice Cube encourages kids to not heed the glorification of a jigga lifestyle and to respect their grandmothers. It's an older, wiser, and more easy-grooving Cube on War & Peace Vol. 2: - one that keeps pace with his old pal Dr. Dre as a gracefully aging gangsta. Mack 10, Puff Daddy, Chris Rock and DJ Quik help Cube take it home. Led Zeppelin Latter Days: The Best of Vol. 2 Atlantic Late last year, Atlantic released Early Days, which culled key cuts from Led Zeppelin I through Led Zeppelin IV. Now, for Latter Days, it's on to Houses of the Holy through In Through the Out Door. It's questionable why anybody with any Zep records would want either album, but, even 20 years after the death of drummer John Bonham, customers will be getting plenty of bang for his or her buck. 'N Sync No Strings Attached Jive The airwaves and videoscapes of America are already suffused with "Bye, Bye, Bye" but the album No Strings Attached is the defining moment for Justin, Lance, JC, Chris and Joey. After leaving RCA and boy-band svengali Lou Pearlman, it was unclear whether pending legal skirmishes would delay the guy's first release with Jive. But it would appear that all disputes have been settled, and we'd wager that 2000 has finally found an album that will keep Santana's Supernatural off of the No. 1 spot on next week's album charts. Pantera Reinventing the Steel EastWest In the middle of the last decade, Pantera was the state of the art heavy metal band. This is no longer the case, as the skinhead-friendly punk rock that Pantera boiled down into heavy metal has now been largely replaced by hip-hop. But for sheer muscularity and bad attitude, Reinventing the Steel makes mincemeat of the korny, limp standard metal of today. Patti Smith Gung Ho Arista The standard bearer of the CBGB's era has picked up her work rate something fierce in the '90s: three albums in four years as opposed to one in a decade and a half. Here, Smith is joined by Television guitarist Tom Verlaine and ex-Husker Du drummer Grant Hart for avant-garde, poetry-slam-worthy rock rants and embryonic balladry. Vengaboys The Platinum Album Groovilicious/Lava/Atlantic Remember what we said about Aqua above? To comprehend this record, just take the comment and substitute 1999 for 1997, "We Like to Party" for "Barbie Girl," Vengaboys for Aqua, and Dutch for Swiss.
