Never let it be said that Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen doesn't know how to throw a party. For the festivities for his interactive Experience Music Project in Seattle, billionaire Allen and his cohorts have assembled a lineup of rock,
As we have previously reported, the still-under-construction Experience Music Museum cost in the area of $100 million to build and was initially conceived to showcase Allen's enormous collection of Jimi Hendrix memorabilia. Then, the museum was to have been devoted to the music of the Northwest, and finally, its focus was expanded to include all music, with an emphasis on Northwest music. In any case, the EMM will feature numerous interactive exhibits. Museum spokesperson Paige Prill told SonicNet.com that the Experience Music Project is not, shall we say, your father's stodgy rock exhibition. "You could point to everything, from the design of this building, which is about the flow of music and the ever-changing elements of rock'n'roll...all the way down to the genres of music that we've chosen to use in the museum to the way that we display them," Prill said. "I don't think there's been anything like this before," said Ed Beeson of Backstage Promotions Inc. to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Beeson has helped assemble the bill and may have forgotten about all three Woodstocks and Live Aid. But clearly, the assembled talent will rival the groundbreaking ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. As you can see from the lineup below, James Brown and Maceo Parker have been booked, but separately. Beeson hopes that an impromptu reunion will take place: "I can't book magic, but we put the ingredients together for magic to happen." Of additional uniqueness is a bill on June 25, which will pair veteran acts from the Northwest with their more recent heirs. Tickets for the opening shows, whether they end up being fully magical or not, went on sale Thursday, May 4 to the museum's charter members. Memberships range from $35 to $5,000. Remaining tickets go on sale to the general public May 13.
