Lil' Kim Notorious KIM Queen Bee/Undeas/Atlantic It took her an epoch in hip-hop time - three years to be exact - but the release of this, her second album Lil' Kim is still the female rapper to beat. With Notorious KIM, a transparent nod to her deceased patron/boyfriend Biggie Smalls, the pint-size, potty-mouthed princess of hip-hop turns in a record destined to bump out of car stereos for months to come. Richard Ashcroft Alone With Everybody Virgin After nine years of fronting the British band the Verve - whose "Bitter Sweet Symphony" dominated the airwaves and Nike commercials for what seemed like eons - the vocalist heartthrob takes a solo stab. Ashcroft retains the Verve's massive production ethos, but explores more emotionally pained terrain than he did with his former band. Doug Sahm The Return of Wayne Douglas Tornado This is the last recorded work of Doug Sahm, the alchemist of all manner of Tex-Mex music. As such, it's an exit more than a return, but a raucous, good-humored one from a true original. Dave Davies Live at the Bottom Line Koch We happened to be here the night of one of the tapings of this album. And it was hot stuff, as is this document: The Davies brother known to shoot the sparks right out of his guitar plays the bejesus out of klassic Kink rave-ups like "'Til the End of the Day" and lesser-known gems as "You Don't Even Know My Name." Nina Gordon Tonight and the Rest of My Life Warner Bros. Louise Post has had her say with Resolver, the new album by Veruca Salt, of which she alone remains of the original lineup. VS is a guitar band that must fight to distinguish itself in a demoralized field. Gordon, Post's former co-bandleader and friend, takes the solo route and turns in a more ambitious, polished effort. Kelly Price Mirror, Mirror Def Soul/Def Jam Ms. Price was the tremendous voice with Whitney Houston on "Heartbreak Hotel" and other gospel-oriented hits. Here's hoping her follow-up album has a similarly great tune. Kottonmouth Kings High Society Capitol How about those paleface rappers? Can't get enough of them? Then scarf up this unremarkable, serviceable effort. Sister Hazel Fortress Universal How about those bland latter-day Southern rockers? Can't get enough of them?
