Midsummer rarely yields a bumper crop of hot new releases (the only bumper crop it does yield usually is lousy big-budget movies). But the following are some records, at the outset, that would seem worth your time. Canibus
2000 B.C. Universal Now is the time that Canibus must deliver on the promise that accompanied his debut, Can-I-Bus. At that time, he culled a lot of attention for "4, 3, 2, 1," his storied diss of LL Cool J. But he failed to come up with anything else that stuck with hip-hop heads afterward, and then he broke with his mentor, Wyclef Jean. Now Canibus must show what he's got, without the benefit of sponsorship of, or the advantage of deriding, a hip-hop elder. Future Bible Heroes I'm Lonely (And I Love It) Merge We can assure you that Stephin Merritt is not perpetrating one of his Cole Porter-style puns with the title of this album from Future Bible Heroes, the trio he leads with fellow Magnetic Fielder Claudia Gonson and onetime Figures on a Beach front man Chris Ewen. He does love loneliness, and you should love that he loves it. The first Merritt record since the universally (and rightly) lauded 69 Love Songs should slake fans' thirst until the fall, when the 6ths, a collection of indie-rock superstars, issue their take on the Merritt songbook. The John Doe Thing Freedom Is... spinART We keep waiting for an X reunion record. And it never comes, and John Doe records keep showing up. But the X bassist/songwriter/vocalist/actor's efforts and gorgeous baritone are good enough to not begrudge him much. Kina Kina DreamWorks Jill Scott Who Is Jill Scott? Hidden Beach/Epic Here are two efforts from a pair of R&B songstresses (Kina has worked with Brownstone, Scott wrote "You Got Me" for the Roots) who both must want a little of that Macy Gray/Kelis/Angie Stone action. Jon Secada Better Part of Me 550/Epic Where has the beefcake of MOR Latin music been? For whatever reason, Secada sat out the Ricky Martin-led Latin music siege on the charts. Maybe it was shrewd for him to wait a year. Maybe it wasn't.
