WIRE: PEARL JAM TO PAT BOONE TO BILLY CORGAN IN TIGHTS

Won't the real news item please stand up, please stand up, please stand up?

• Danish police have officially ruled that the Roskilde tragedy, in which nine people were trampled to death during Pearl Jam's

performance at the Danish festival, was a freak accident. The police report also concluded that the organizers' safety measures - which included barriers necessary to prevent crushes - were adequate for the festival.

"It's normal that young people push and squeeze at rock concerts, but here it sadly developed in a catastrophic way," said Police Chief Constable Uffe Kornerup. He delivered the report to the Danish ministries of justice and culture. According to the Associated Press, the government is unlikely to take any further action.

The report notes that mud contributed to the disaster. Heavy rains before the festival had made the ground slippery. When the crowd surged forward as Pearl Jam played, several people slipped, leaving them to the mercy of the fans being pushed from behind. A preliminary report had accused Pearl Jam of playing "a kind of music which is apt to make the audience very wild and very excited."

• An investigation by the New York Daily News into campaign contributions has revealed the political affiliations of some of your favorite stars. We hope. Don Henley and Quincy Jones both donated $2,000 to Democratic candidate Al Gore. Sheryl Crow, Herbie Hancock, Lisa Loeb, Chynna Phillips, and Barbra Streisand each donated a grand to Gore. Loretta Lynn reached deep into her cowboy boots to give Republican candidate George W. Bush $2,000, while Pat Boone gave the Texas conservative $1,000. But the pop stars' choice is Green Party candidate Ralph Nader, who received $2,000 from Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and Casey Kasem.

Billy Joel is serious about this classical music thing, and he's enlisted pianist Hyuang-Ki Joo to help him out. "He's very helpful to me," Joel told The New York Times. "Sometimes I'll write something and he'll go, 'You can't do that, that's Chopin.' I'll say, 'I'm writing Chopin?' ... I'm working on something recently and he says, 'You can't do that, that's Ravel.' And I say, 'Now I'm writing Ravel. I'm really getting good.'" Keep stroking that ego, fella.

• The Rhyme & Reason tour, starring Beastie Boys and Rage Against the Machine, is going to go online. The Boys' label Grand Royal is teaming up with Intertainer to make a 12-part online series of 10-minute films. The Bananas 2000 Webisodes will follow two fans as they pursue the tour in a 1972 Fleetwood Cadillac. The car was also featured in the Boys' clip for the single "Hey Ladies." Watch the show at www.intertainer.com/b2k.html.

Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan is already looking for a new job. He turned up at an Extreme Championship Wrestling bout this past weekend in Peoria, Ill., to play an acoustic set, which was soon curtailed by what we can only presume was a staged altercation with grappler Lou E. Dangerously. Soon an all-out battle royal was going on involving Jack Victory, Tommy Dreamer, and a few other steroid addicts. Give the bald dude some tights!

• Brian Littrell's two Chihuahuas have been returned to him. On Sunday, July 23, Lil' Tyk Thomas and Litty Leigh were both found separately in Atlanta after being dog-napped last week. Brian coordinated the search effort after flying from Sweden, where he was recording the new Backstreet Boys album. He won't press charges, but he really should get rid of the evolved rats and buy himself a pit bull.

Mariah Carey's film All That Glitters is finally due to start shooting. Signed on are Mariah; Da Brat, who plays Mariah's friend; Max Beesley (PBS's Tom Jones), a male love interest; and director Vondie Curtis-Hall. 20th Century Fox has agreed to distribute the film in partnership with Columbia Pictures, so it looks like we all may even get to see it in a theater someday.

Jefferson Airplane's former manager is suing Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit and Napster while he's at it. Matthew Katz named Napster, Napster founders Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, Napster interim CEO Hank Barry, Napster supporters Durst and Roger McGuinn, and all Napster users in a lawsuit charging copyright infringement. See you in court, folks.

• The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Experience Hendrix are teaming up to present a Jimi Hendrix retrospective. The exhibit will run at the Cleveland museum beginning September 12, and is set to include photos, Hendrix drawings, yearbooks, lyric manuscripts, and even a couch he once slept on. Visitors can also enjoy a special 3D presentation of Hendrix live footage.

• More tribute album madness - this time in the name of Joni Mitchell. A Case of Joni is penciled in by Reprise Records for a September release and will include interpretations of Mitchell's music by Janet Jackson, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Sarah McLachlan, k.d. lang, Lindsey Buckingham, Annie Lennox, and Stevie Wonder.

Poison's C.C. DeVille on their new album, Power to the People: "I'm so lucky to have this second chance. I'm really grateful. I have two irons in the fire, Poison and Samantha 7, and that's just a testimony to what happens if you get clean and sober, how your brain can actually comprehend more than one thing and stay on topic for more than 30 seconds. I took, like, a musical enema."

Britney Spears on why her clothes always seem to have shrunk in the wash: "I only wear these crop tops because other clothes would make me sweat when I dance. I never wanted this sexy image. I want to become like Madonna, only without all the men, gossip, and scandals." Which would leave what, exactly?

• Doctor, doctor! If I read one more item about Britney Spears, I might go crazy. Then settle down and do what we do when the Britneys of this life become too much. Write a story on Björk. Sure enough, Björk is offering her duet with Radiohead singer Thom Yorke, "I've Seen It All," on her Web site www.bjork.com. The song is from her forthcoming Selmasongs soundtrack to Dancer in the Dark and yes, we're feeling better now.
