WON'T THE MTV AWARDS NOMINEES PLEASE STAND UP, PLEASE STAND UP

Come September 12 of this year, Eminem may have more grist for his confrontational rap mill. The besieged rapper will square off against the boy band 'N Sync in several categories, including Video of the Year, at the 7th annual MTV Video

Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall.

Will Eminem be courteous to the Floridian Fivesome? Or will he smack them upside their scrupulously-coiffed heads in full view of their pop-music peers? Maybe the Wayans Brothers can be counted on settle Em down. Shawn and Marlon, now the dominant Wayans due to the box-office success of Scary Movie which the pair wrote and starred in, will host the ceremony.

Both Wayans appeared on Total Request Live yesterday, as 'N Sync and Carson Daly announced the nominations. Marlon seemed nonplussed by the prospect of having to live up to the promise of storied MTV Awards host Chris Rock. "This is better than the summer I lost my virginity in the projects stairwell to the fat chick," he said.

Eminem and 'N Sync match one another with six nominations each, followed by five each for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Sisqo and Christina Aguilera, (who may want to have a word with Em, based on his awards show dis of her in his latest single). Macy Gray, D'Angelo and Britney Spears have four nominations each, and Blink-182, Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, Destiny's Child, and Supergrass culled three nominations each.

As of yet, 'N Sync and Rage Against the Machine are the only acts set to perform live. So barring a smackdown between Eminem and 'N Sync, or a scenario finding Aguilera scratching Em's eyes out, or (please God let this happen) the much threatened Fred Durst vs. Creed's Scott Stapp bout, those are the live fireworks you can look forward to.
