Vic Chesnutt Merriment Backburner Southern gothic songwriter Chesnutt is so highly regarded by a wide swath of artists - he has toured with Lambchop and Widespread Panic - that it would seem that
Dandy Warhols Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia Capitol Some say that this record is the bid by the Warhols - the Portland Ore., band remembered for the semi-hit "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" - to create an epic, late-period rock masterpiece a la Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs or Flaming Lips' The Soft Bulletin. We're not so sure about that, but Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia is a lot less monotonous and a lot more fun than the relentlessly dull The Dandy Warhols Come Down. Morcheeba Fragments of Freedom Sire English electronica act Morcheeba were always a bit less, shall we say, chilly than many of their peers. Now, with Fragments of Freedom, the trio demonstrate why they're still around, whereas so many of those peers have vanished. Poor Righteous Teachers Losin' My Religion Exit 7A Recordings What would PRT, the conscious rappers from the militant Public Enemy days, make of the current bling/bling predilections of current hip-hop? Probably, as evidenced by Losin' My Religion, it would amount to an alignment with "underground" hip-hop. Rancid Rancid Epitaph We always liked to call Rancid Sha Na Na's answer to the Clash. And it is still thus on this follow-up to the Berkeley, Calif., punk band's 1998 set, Life Won't Wait. Before you Rancid fans besiege us with emails calling for our heads, we'd like to say that we like Sha Na Na just fine and that nothing you can write can equal the bile that Yes fans are capable of once provoked. Brian Setzer Orchestra Vavoom! Interscope Before teen-directed pop absorbed every possible opportunity for music industry hype, neo-swing music and culture captured the attention of many 20-somethings. And Brian Setzer, the head Stray Cat, was the most notable beneficiary of that hype. With swing culture no longer quite as praised, Setzer releases Vavoom! It won't catch the moment the way that that "Jump Jive An' Wail" song did, but Setzer still has a lot of zing in his guitar-playing and zip in his band's charts.
