When news stories jockey for position, we'll always go for the one in the nude. Read our news wire for more titillation... Sorry, guys. It seems that the Dixie Chicks will be keeping their clothes on,
Adieu to Gilles Thibault. Thibault wrote one of the greatest songs of all time, "My Way." His way came to an end on August 2, when he died at the age of 72 in Paris. Thibault wrote "Comme d'Habitude" in 1967 with Jacques Revaux and Claude Francois. Paul Anka translated the anthem as "My Way," offered it to Frank Sinatra, thus giving birth to a thousand horrible karaoke performances. Another Thibault fan is David Bowie, who shopped around his own translation of "Comme" in the '60s, erroneously believing the song was the work of Jacques Brel. The latest fab Madonna song to drift onto Napster is called "Paradise." According to Spin.com, the song sees the world's pre-eminent pop priestess singing in French. We'd prefer it if she mastered English first. In Madonna's latest concession to the bourgeoisie, there's even an orchestra swelling in the background. Warning: According to our hard drive, the song is available in a Spin Funk Mix, DJ Flange Sharp Mix, Aquarian Star Mix, and even an Angel & Fabian Mix. It has been revealed by the Associated Press that Eminem turned down an offer to settle his mother's libel suit. Debbie Mathers-Briggs accuses Slim Shady of defaming her by presenting her in songs like "My Name Is" as an irresponsible pot-smoker. According to court records, she offered to settle her $10 million suit for $2 million, but her errant son refused the deal. Eminem's nemesis Christina Aguilera releases her long-awaited Spanish-language album, Mi Reflejo, on September 12. According to BMG, the first single will be "Ven Conmigo," which translates as "Come On Over." The album contains five oldies like "Genie in a Bottle" translated into Spanish ("Genio Atrapado") and six new songs. She's not going away either. A Christmas album hits in November. There's no Stone Temple Pilots greatest hits in the band's future, despite previous reports. According to a spokesperson, the group has parted with its old management company, Steve Stewart Management, and joined the Q Prime team. The compilation Big Bang Babies was to have included new tracks "You Can't Drive Me Away" and "Heed the Water Whisper." Singer Scott Weiland says the new songs might be made available via soundtracks. If you want to know what the self-styled Third and Final Beast has planned for his next album, Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death), you can hear Marilyn Manson's new material on his Web site. He's posted a clip of "The Love Song" on www.marilynmanson.net. While listening to the undeniably heavy bawl of rage, you can also check out the cover artwork for the Holy Wood novel. Predictably, it's three guns shaped as a crucifix. It seems that Mary Guibert, mother of the late Jeff Buckley, won't let her dead son lie. She's now keeping his memory alive by touring around the country and meeting with the drowned troubadour's fans. Guibert is accompanied by film and video of her son and will answer questions about his life and times. Find out where her road show turns up next by visiting www.jeffbuckley.com. The old Billy Paul song "Me and Mrs. Jones" is becoming a musical. And it stars Lou Rawls ("You'll Never Find a Love Like Mine"). The song has been adapted to tell the story of Mrs. Jones' dalliance with a judge. The musical is produced by the No. 1 hit's legendary writers/producers, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, with rehearsals currently taking place in Los Angeles. Acid casualties of the world, unite! And then thumb a ride up to Seattle in November, when the city hosts the fourth annual Terrastock Festival of psychedelic music. Included in the lineup of the festival, which runs November 3-5, are such luminaries as Bardo Pond, Japan's Ghost, Britain's Bevis Frond, and a band called Green Pajamas. Yoiks. The MTV cartoon Daria has a special place among the tortures of the damned, as its sardonic heroine reminds VH1.com of an old girlfriend. But there's no such angst for Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, who will contribute his voice to the Daria TV movie, titled Daria: Is It Fall Yet? We won't be sitting in front of the TV on August 27, when it premieres. The nominees for the 11th annual International Bluegrass Music Awards have been announced, and the Del McCoury Band have become early favorites with 10 nominations. Among the nods are Vocal Group, Instrumental Group, and Entertainer of the Year. Ronnie McCoury, the band's vocalist and mandolin player, also picked up an Instrumental Album of the Year nomination for his Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza. Hole's Samantha Maloney on touring with Motley Crue: "They love women and they're pro-women. I mean they're chauvinistic pigs on the one hand, but on the other hand, they treat the women that they respect with respect & They're just such gentlemen. And they call me like their little sister. They take care of me and everything. They're old enough to be my dad." Counting Crows' Adam Duritz on reality: "I was unable to handle big success when it happened. I'm much better adjusted to it now. I'm probably more famous now than back then, but the 14-year-old-girl mania was stronger then. What it was like for me when we hit is probably what it's like for 'N Sync now." Garbage's Shirley Manson puts Napster in a surprising perspective: "It pisses me off that the entire world believes it's morally A-OK to rape musicians of their art and their livelihood. Well, it would be a completely different story wouldn't it, if there was a huge, big Nike factory that was being plundered on a regular basis and everyone knew who was doing the stealing and the stolen Nikes were being given away on the Internet for free to anyone who wanted them. Do you think the f*cking establishment would just sit back and allow it to happen? No, I don't think so. That particular racket would be shut down in a matter of hours! I realize that particular analogy is a little out there but you get my point." |
