Victoria Williams Water to Drink Atlantic A true American gothic roots songstress, Williams keeps on keepin' on. As always, she winds her eerie voice around equally idiosyncratic songs. To read
Foreigner Jukebox Heroes: The Foreigner Anthology Rhino "Cold as Ice." "Long, Long Way From Home." "Urgent." "I Want to Know What Love Is." Foreigner may not have looked as cool as Led Zeppelin, but Lou Gramm, Mick Jones, and associates knew how to make great hard rock singles. This double-disc anthology is a testament to that irrefutable truth. Dave Alvin Public Domain: Songs From the Wild Land... HighTone Once the guitarist and songwriter for the neo-retro Blasters, Alvin has recently emerged as the Springsteen of the West Coast. This is borne out in every way (except in the fame-and-fortune department) on Public Domain, which of course is a collection of songs in the public domain. Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys Night Tide HighTone In the same way that the Blasters did, Big Sandy merges a variety of retro styles on Night Tide. There's a more personal, pained tone here than on previous efforts. Graham Coxon The Golden D Transcopic/Astralwerks The guitarist for Blur makes a hardcore and "'eavy mehtull"-festooned album. Unlike 1998's The Sky Is Too High, this album has nary a trace of reflective balladry: Coxon stomps the pedal down and melts frets for the entire record. Ramblin' Jack Elliott The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack Vanguard Click here to see VH1.com's Jack Elliott news story and learn about one of this country's greatest troubadours in the tradition of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, as well as the new documentary and soundtrack on this pioneering musician. Anoushka Shankar Anourag Angel The daughter of Indian music master Ravi Shankar can tear it up on the sitar, just like dear old dad. Unified Theory Unified Theory 3:33/Universal Ex-members of Pearl Jam and Blind Melon make their case in a post-alternative rock landscape. Rob Wasserman Space Island Division One/Atlantic The upright bassist to rock's elders (Lou Reed, Bob Weir), Wasserman slips and slides his way around hip-hop and techno grooves. Wheatus Wheatus Columbia On first hearing "Teenage Dirtbag" from this Long Island, N.Y., band, you might feel like ending it all. But the second or third time around, you'll be compelled to sing along.
