Foreigner may not have looked as cool as Led Zeppelin, but Lou Gramm, Mick Jones, and associates knew how to make great hard rock singles. HighTone Once the guitarist and songwriter for the neo-retro Blasters, Alvin has recently emerged as the Springsteen of the West Coast. This is borne out in every way (except in the fame-and-fortune department) on Public Domain, which of course is a collection of songs in the public domain. Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys Night Tide HighTone In the same way that the Blasters did, Big Sandy merges a variety of retro styles on Night Tide. There's a more personal, pained tone here than on previous efforts. Graham Coxon The Golden D Transcopic/Astralwerks The guitarist for Blur makes a hardcore and "'eavy mehtull"-festooned album. Unlike 1998's The Sky Is Too High, this album has nary a trace of reflective balladry: Coxon stomps the pedal down and melts frets for the entire record.
