WIRE: FROM ROBERT PLANT TO DIXIE CHICKS TO SURVIVOR |

Taking the "nonny" out of the "hey-nonny-no," it's VH1.com's belabored News Wire... While he once asked you to squeeze his lemon until the juice ran down his leg, Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant might actually be
So why has the 51-year-old Plant decided to enter middle age with a little dignity? Well, even with Zeppelin he championed Fairport Convention and the Incredible String Band. And he recently told the London Times that "I've seen every kind of rock'n'roll madness, and this is to be as far removed from that as possible." "In a way I'd like to move it on to the next level, but at the same time I can't do that without reintroducing all that rock'n'roll hoopla," he admitted. "I don't want it to get bigger. I started off scratching around tiny basements in the bowels of buildings, and to come full circle back to this might not seem much to a lot of people. But to me it's really exciting." The Dixie Chicks have stuck with their principles, even though it might end up costing them millions of dollars. The plucky country trio have decided not to sign an endorsement deal with Coca-Cola because the Atlanta soft-drink maker can't reach an interim agreement with striking actors that would allow the picketing thesps to shoot advertisements for the company. One company that has signed such an agreement is Burger King, for which the Backstreet Boys recently filmed a commercial. Prince is following in the noble Socratic tradition of asking questions people really don't want to answer. On his Web site www.npgonlineltd.com, under "Latest Post," he wants to know, "Would this b copyright infringement?" Apparently Prince thinks Santana's "Calling," from Supernatural, sounds very similar to his pal Larry Graham's 1973 ditty "People." Now if Prince could only make an album that sounded similar to Sign 'O' the Times, we'd all be happy. Kiss seem to have gotten over their Phantom of the Park fiasco. First the band appeared in the Gene Simmons-produced Detroit Rock City. Now Simmons is producing the CBS TV movie Rock and Roll All Night, which will tell the story of a love affair that begins at a Kiss concert. No, it's not between Simmons and his ego, but rather two young Kiss fans. The Kleenex quotient will be lower than, say, Brief Encounter. And Peter Criss will probably have fewer lines than he did in Phantom. It was only a matter of time, but here comes the Survivor CD. The disc will contain the main title and some dramatic chords to eat rats by. Says the TV show's composer, Russ Landau, "I've written a lot of themes, but I've never received anywhere near this much attention as for this song. If you close your eyes, you will be on the islands." Hopefully not with Dirk. Lions Gate Releasing has picked up the film The Million Dollar Hotel, written by Bono, directed by Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas), and starring Mel Gibson. The metaphysical detective story, in which Mel searches for a billionaire's missing son, doesn't have a release date yet. Early reports say that Wenders has never met a window he didn't want to stick a camera into. Ron Wood's got his own spa to set up. The Rolling Stone recently walked out of a clinic where he was trying to kick his drinking habit, but now he's established the Harrington Club - an exclusive spa that features a steam room, reflexology treatments, and organic food. Woody says the club was actually his wife's idea. The organic wine the club serves is presumably his own. Vertical Horizon are learning the downside of being "Everything You Want." They've had to return $15,000 to a promoter after they failed to perform at an April charity concert because they felt it was too cold. Vertical Horizon will also make a $27,500 donation to the Greensboro, N.C., chapter of Jaycees, which sponsored the concert with radio station WKZL. Dave Matthews fans who would occasionally like to see a gig without Dave Matthews might want to make their way to the fifth annual Autumn Equinox Music & Arts Festival and Campout in Capon Bridge, W.Va. The event will feature several Dave Matthews associates, including Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and Tim Reynolds, but no Dave. It runs September 22-24. Don't tell Metallica. To celebrate their new album, Moment of Glory, the mighty Scorpions are playing four dates with an orchestra in tow. The band rocks Phoenix (September 21), Las Vegas (September 23), Los Angeles (September 28), and San Francisco (September 30). Singer Klaus Meine described Moment, in which Scorpions classics are reworked for band and ensemble, as "a vision coming true." He's German. New York's Hammerstein Ballroom will find several musical titans under its roof when the venue hosts this year's Rhythm & Blues Foundation Awards on September 6. Honorees include Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, and Gerald Levert. Smokey Robinson hosts the gala. Not content with just inflicting a new album upon the world, Fastball are also releasing an EP called C-Sides. The CD will include some songs that didn't make it on The Harsh Light of Day, the follow-up to 1998's All the Pain That Money Can Buy, a live version of their hit "The Way," and a cover of the Replacements' "Androgynous." It should be out later this year. Both Madonna and David Bowie missed out on the opportunity to name their children after a Web site, but Travis and Jessica Thornhill haven't. Now 5-day-old Iuma Dylan-Lucas Thornhill is set to receive $5,000 in cash from www.iuma.com, which ran a "Name Your Baby IUMA" contest. The name is an acronym for "Internet Underground Music Archive," which Iuma may find tough explaining in the future. Dad Travis is a member of Opus, a band whose MP3s can be found on the Web site. Elton John on Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP: "It's funny. It's clever. It's poetry. And it's also musically interesting. I just think Eminem has made a really fantastic album. Rock 'n' roll has always supposed to have been about pushing the buttons, hasn't it?" We're still recovering from the last time Elton pushed ours. |
