MARILYN MANSON'S BIG DAY OUT |
||||

Watch out, Manson's about. All Marilyn Manson might have wanted was a quiet weekend in London, but once he teamed up with Des Moines, Iowa, metal band Slipknot, the self-proclaimed Antichrist Superstar managed to leave the Kerrang! heavy
The lanky tabloid star flew to England on Monday, August 28, where he was first spied taking in a set by neu-grungers Queens of the Stone Age that very night. Manson was lurking at the side of the stage at London's Scala Cinema as the band played songs from its album Rated R and even tunes stretching back to their early days as stoner rockers Kyuss. He also took time to discuss his forthcoming album Holy Wood, due out on October, with the British music press. The scrawny Satanist said that the first single would be "Disposable Teens," a song inspired by the decline and fall of Gary Glitter, the "Rock and Roll Part II" singer convicted last year of possessing child pornography. Manson added he might record a version of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" as the B-side. But don't expect him to give peace much of a chance. "Some of Lennon's Communist sentiments in his music later in his life were very dangerous," thundered Manson. "I think he died because of it. I don't think his death was any sort of accident. Aside from that, I think he's one of my favorite songwriters of all time." The next stop was the Kerrang! Awards at London's Hammersmith Palais on Tuesday, August 29. Slipknot celebrated their three awards - Best Band in the World, Best International Live Act, and Single of the Year for "Wait and Bleed" - by tearing the stage apart. According to NME.com, the nine masked members set fire to their table in celebration and then flipped it over. The band members, who were clearly taking the term "ecstatic" a little too far, also smashed chairs and glasses. That was enough to set off a bout of bun throwing that escalated into a full-fledged food fight among guests like Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters, and Motorhead. As she made her way to the stage to give Manson a Hall of Fame Award, Britt Ekland, star of The Man With the Golden Gun and cult classic The Wicker Man, slipped on a stray piece of watermelon and fell. Manson became one of the first award winners to pick up his prize from a woman sitting in a chair. Ekland was later taken to the hospital, where it was discovered she had broken her ankle and wrist in the fall. As if things hadn't already taken a turn for la dolce vita, Queens of the Stone Age picked up their gong for Best International Newcomer - typically doled out two years after the band's first album - with two midgets in tow. While Federico Fellini belched his approval from heaven, one Queen explained the band members' all-white attire by saying they were dressed as lines of cocaine. The awards ceremony itself was far from a mutual backslapping affair. Motorhead's Lemmy sniffed to the Daily Mail, "I haven't heard anything by Slipknot - I have heard of them though and I think it's disgusting." Citizens in the Irish capital of Dublin would doubtlessly agree with the be-boiled 'Head boy. The National Parents Council of Ireland made a formal complaint against the band's show tonight (August 30) at Dublin's the Point, and now the gig has been called off. Promoters said the band had canceled due to "logistical problems." "I objected to the way in which the concert was being promoted and the suggestion that there would a staged [fight] taking place and also the fact that basically the stage would be used as a public toilet," said John Whyte of the NPC. "I contacted the Point and told them that for such a reputable venue, if such obscenities did take place, I felt they were lowering their standards. "We received numerous obscene messages on our answering machine from fans of the band. And one fan told me that he was nearly 16 and he felt he had the right to attend the concert because all this sort of stuff about the band was available on the Internet anyway."
