In a development sure to launch at least a few pool-hall fistfights, VH1 has teamed up with an all-star panel to name the top 100 hard rock acts in music history, and Led Zeppelin top the list.
The music video network polled an
array of rockers - including Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Grohl, Korn drummer David Silveria, Flea, Sebastian Bach, and Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler - to determine the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" for a five-night series kicking off November 13 at 10 p.m. ET.
Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott, Anthrax's Scott Ian and John Bush, Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore, Faith No More's Mike Bordin, Yngwie Malmsteen, Lita Ford, Rush's Geddy Lee, and Pat Benatar also served on the panel, which tapped Zeppelin as hard rock's top act of all time. The men behind classics like "Dazed and Confused" and "Stairway to Heaven" edged out fellow British riff masters Black Sabbath, who landed at No. 2.
While U.K. exports rule the top of the list, 73 of the top 100 acts hail from the U.S. And while rock history is served throughout the list - with the inclusion of the Yardbirds, the Who, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, the Rolling Stones, and other legendary acts - contemporary acts also muscled their way onto the top 100. Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Korn, Pantera, Ministry, Foo Fighters, Green Day, and Tool all made the cut [what, no Bullet Boys? - Motor Ed.].
Many of the artists who helped select the top 100 will be interviewed in the VH1 series, as will Billy Corgan, Alice Cooper, Chuck D, C.C. DeVille, Peter Frampton, Sammy Hagar, Rob Halford, James Hetfield, Kid Rock, Liz Phair, Henry Rollins, Vince Neil, Slash, and others.
