Talk Talk Talk

by VH1.com Staff

Give an artist an award, and all of a sudden he or she wants to talk. That was certainly the case backstage at the My VH1 Music Awards last Thursday. As the winners came through, we asked them what you wanted to know. Read on to discover

what the stars like Scott Stapp, Santana, Bon Jovi and "Weird Al" Yankovic had to say about winning, elections, new band members, and hamsters and mayonnaise.

Scott Stapp of Creed

On fame: "We dreamed about becoming this famous. All of us shared a common dream years ago - that our music and art would take us to this level. It's just a dream though. You never know if it's going to happen. I think we all believe that it was going to happen, that we would have accepted nothing less. There was a fire burning there and it definitely motivated us, and it helped propel us to where we are today. The live show and touring made it all real. Playing in sold-out arena shows. The fans spent their hard-earned money on us, to see us play. That is the big time. The fans voting for these awards - no politics allowed - just straight-up fans, that's a sense of accomplishment. We feel like we give them so much, but they give us back tenfold."

On spirituality: "I come from a very religious background, brought up in the church. That upbringing makes the spiritual and religious imagery of my lyrics and some of the reference points inherent. But to clear it up, and we've said this 1,000 times, we're not a Christian rock band. It's not our main concern. But one area of growth as a human being is to figure where you fall on a spiritual level. Of course, spirituality is important to me, because I'm trying to find stability and peace in my life. And, to quote Bono, I still haven't found what I'm looking for. Right now I'm feeling happy, on the top of my career, and I want to enjoy the moment, enjoy my two best friends, and have it never end."

On what fans want to know: "These days it's along the lines of 'When's your next record coming out?' 'What direction are you going in?' 'Hey, I've got some ideas for your stage show.' Basically our fans want to get to know us on a personal level, and we make ourselves accessible to them because it's important to us. That's not something we publicize or talk about a lot. But we definitely spend time with them. Every show we go out in the audience and grab people to come back and hang, and basically have sit-downs where we talk about music and get to know each other in a friendly kind of way."

On Dave Grohl's version of "With Arms Wide Open": "Anything that has any negativity about what we do, I don't acknowledge, because that goes against everything I stand for as a human being, and everything this band stands for. We're positive and use what we have in a positive way. I have much respect for Dave Grohl, much respect for his talent and his art. But I don't acknowledge negativity."

On adding another band member: "Right now Brett Hestla, who's got his own band the Virgos [Merlot], is filling in for us while we tour. But there's no talk of adding a new member. Right now we can accomplish everything we need to record-wise and songwriting-wise. With Brian [Marshall] gone, the thing that hurts is that we lost a friend. I hope someday we can get back together again."

On weird things that fans do: "Fans sculpted busts of all four of us. We have them up in our manager's office. And tattoos. We've seen a lot of Creed tattoos - our logo or the song they like the best. Wow, that's a forever thing. It's shocking. I'm flattered."

Carlos Santana

On practicing guitar: "I spend an hour and a half to two hours practicing guitar. My family falls asleep around 10:30 p.m., and until 3 in the morning I have fun playing guitar with Miles Davis or anyone like that."

On what's planned for next year: "Nothing. Just being a great husband. Hopefully I can win father of the year award next year. I'm going to work really, really hard and not upset my children or my wife. It's a big goal. I think a lot of musicians fail at domestic rhythm. I've been married for 27 years, and next year I'm going to stop. No Santana, no Carlos. Just daddy/husband."

On future collaborators: "I dream big. I'd like to work with Mr. Bob Dylan, Mr. Michael Jackson, Prince, Aretha, Whitney. Why dream small, but let's see what happens. Right now I don't have anything on the table, but I do have a lot of songs. My main goal is to create music that dismantles the violence in the schools, the shootings. So hopefully we can work with other musicians, women and men, who have the same motivations."

Jon Bon Jovi

On winning: "All the chads have been counted and I am the next president of the United States. You think Bubba was fun? Wait till you see me as the prez. Wheeeeee!"

On finding a new generation of fans: "One thing we wondered when the record came out was whether or not we'd be across the fence - whether we'd become a vintage band, or if we were going to remain contemporary for the kids. But 'It's My Life' was such a big hit we got the kids and the parents. And we've been around such a long time that it's cool to see. Crush has crossed over generations. It's amazing. [Younger listeners] find Crush and we say, 'Oh, by the way there's nine other albums.' I wrote 'Runaway' in 1982. But here we are, the old men of the sea."

On side projects: "I think one of the great things about Bon Jovi is that we have so many other creative outlets. Richie [Sambora] makes solo records, Tico [Torres] has his art work, I make movies, David [Bryan]'s writing a Broadway play - we come back here and that gives us four other outlets to bring the creativity home from."

On advising young musicians: "Don't worry about what's fashionable. Bell bottoms will be gone and back again. Find your voice. Stay true."

On Jon's acting career: "I'm making a vampire movie in January and February in Mexico. It's gonna be good."

"Weird Al" Yankovic

On political humor: "It's hard to do political humor because it ages very quickly. Nobody's going to want to hear about 'swinging chads' a year from now. I just got off a 16-month tour and I'm having a bit of a real life right now."

On his Thanksgiving day: "It was pretty traditional. You know, hamsters and mayonnaise."

On his next release and what will be on it: "You shouldn't expect anything right now. My next album is a ways off, and whatever's big right now won't necessarily be big when it comes out. If I did it now, there'd be a lot of teen action and rap/metal and boy bands, but it's hard to say what will be going on eight months from now."

On his favorite boy band: "The Beatles."

On his favorite song of all time: 'Mama Get the Hammer There's a Fly on the Baby's Head" - it never gets old.'

On cutting his hair: "What would it take to cut my hair off? I don't know. If I ever get cast in the lead of the Yul Brenner story or something like that. For my art, I guess I'd have to consider it."

On what he's doing for New Year's Eve: "Probably just hiding in a closet naked and shivering."

On the one thing that he has to take with him on tour: "The tour bus. Otherwise it would be a long way to walk."

On whether he has a New Year's resolution: "Absolutely none. I live every day like it was my last, with a lot of yelling and screaming and gnashing of teeth."

On the hardest video he's ever done: "'The Saga Begins,' my Star Wars parody. We were in the desert, it was 120 degrees in the shade. Not pleasant."

On his most unusual fan encounter: "I'm always amazed at the people with Weird Al tattoos. My image or name on them? That weirds me out."
