Nelson Twins Soldier On "Because They Can"

Ricky's flaxen-haired sons move beyond pop-metal with tours, label, legacy.

The Nelsons will take to the road this summer in support of a commemorative 4-CD Ricky Nelson box set. (Guzman)

We all know what happens to child stars. But what about the children of child stars? And what if they're twins?

If their names are Gunnar and Matthew Nelson, it means a shot at pop stardom and a life-long legacy to live up to. In the

mid-'80s the golden-locked twins had a brief moment of stardom that recalled memories of their famous father. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Nelson grew up on TV in the popular sitcom "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet," and later spun his teen stardom into a highly successful pop career in the late 1950's and '60s.

With their squeaky-clean image, matching blond manes and pop-metal sound, Nelson may not have had their own sitcom, but they were the sound of easy-on-the-eyes metal in the early '90s. Their #1 debut, 1990's After the Rain, sold more than two million copies thanks to such ballads as "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection" (RealAudio excerpt) and two other top-10 singles.

But it took five years for the follow-up, Because They Can, to be released, and by then the honeymoon was over. The boys parted ways with Geffen Records and founded an independent label, Stone Canyon Records, named for their late father's touring band. Although their mugs no longer showed up on MTV and radio, the pair soldiered on, releasing five albums (Imaginator, The Silence Is Broken, Brother Harmony and Life) via Stone Canyon while continuing to tour the world.

Their most recent release was last year's tribute album to their dad, Like Father, Like Sons, which included the pair's rocking take on such Ricky Nelson hits as "Garden Party" and "Fools Rush In."

Today you'll find the 33-year-old Nelsons in a Nashville studio working on their eight album, honing a sound they've dubbed "Extreme Country." The duo are also prepping a North America summer tour that will include shows at theaters, county fairs and casinos, followed by a week-long stint on a Carnival Cruise line in early October. The tour will be a promotional vehicle for last year's four-CD Ricky Nelson box set, Legacy.

Gunnar's ongoing dialogue with his fans on the Nelsons' official website included a December confession in which the guitarist/singer shares his emotional fragility in light of a stalking incident and a decade of failed romances with deceitful women.

The site also asks fans to help the brothers finish a "Living Biography Retrospective Project." The bio, to be posted online later this year, will consist of articles, photos, memories and album and concert reviews from their birth (9/20/67) to the present.

Per the title of their 1995 album, the Nelson brothers keep on keepin' on, "because they can."
