Foo Fighters rocked the hallowed halls of ivy last year.
The biggest hit in the dorm rooms and frat houses was "Learn to Fly,"
according to performing rights organization BMI, which awarded frontman Dave Grohl and bassist Nate Mendel the
award for Most Performed Song On College Radio in Los Angeles Tuesday night.
The BMI Pop Awards saluted the writers and publishers of the 50 most
publicly played songs within the BMI catalog from October 1999 through
September 2000. The top award, Song of the Year, went to "Breathe," a #1 hit for Faith Hill written by Stephanie Bentley.
"Breathe" (RealAudio excerpt), from Hill's album of the same name, also received a 2000 BMI Country Award. The song has been played in public more than 2 million times, the organization says.
Cory Rooney received the Songwriter of the Year award for placing three songs on BMI's most performed list: "Bring It All to Me" (recorded by Blaque with 'NSYNC), "I Need to Know" and "You Sang to Me" (both recorded by Marc Anthony).
Double winners for songwriting awards included Sting for "Brand New Day" and "Desert Rose"; Creed vocalist Scott Stapp and guitarist Mark Tremonti for "Higher" and "With Arms Wide Open"; and Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas for his Santana collaboration "Smooth" and his own band's "Bent."
Also picking up two awards each were Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs (Pink's
"There You Go," Destiny's Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills"); Fred and Rodney Jerkins (Toni Braxton's "He Wasn't Man Enough," DC's "Say My Name"); Robi "Draco" Rosa (Ricky Martin's "She's All I Ever Had" and Sisqó's "Thong Song"); and Jerry "Wonder" Duplessis (Santana's "Maria Maria," Whitney Houston's "My Love Is Your Love.")
BMI's chief rival, the American Society of Composers, Authors and
Publishers (ASCAP), will pass out its pop honors in Los Angeles next week.
Most pop songwriters are aligned with either BMI or ASCAP, which track radio airplay, live performances and other public uses of their members' songs and pay royalties accordingly.
