Shaniqua don't live here no more, but rhyme-slinging funnyman Little-T's grandparents' do. Grandma and Grandpa's home is one of two makeshift studios in which T and beat maker One Track Mike recorded their recently released debut, Fome Is
Little-T revealed his grandparent's connection to the album last week while discussing the Slick Rick collaboration, "Guidance Counselor," on which T fields questions including, "Do you like big butts?" and "Do you always hold your n--s?" "[Slick Rick] came down to my grandfather's house and we put him in a makeshift-ass booth where we have all the cushions off my grandparents' couches all stacked up against the walls," T explained. "We're like, 'Sorry, your majesty.' He was like, 'No, I know what it's like.' That sh-- was hot as hell." One hip-hop legend down, two to go. Atlanta duo Outkast, who took Little-T and One Track Mike on tour with them last summer, are lined up to remix the New Brunswick, New Jersey, team's next single, "Wings." Little-T described the upcoming single as "more legit material" compared to "Shaniqua," a novelty tune that garnered radio and MTV play in late summer. "Our label thought 'Shaniqua' was the easiest for the masses to get," Little-T said. "We were down to release it as long as it wasn't going to be our legacy. I think it created the right kind of buzz. The kids liked it a lot and if we can make some kids happy, that's what we're about." Little-T is the latest white rapper to break into mainstream music. Like Bubba Sparxxx, he was instantly compared to Eminem. Unlike Sparxxx, his voice is nearly identical to the controversial Detroit rapper's. "He's an ill MC," T responds. "To be compared to him isn't a problem. To rap in his shadow, that would suck. I would jump in front of him any day. But it's not even a comparison." Little-T and One Track Mike most differ from Em and producer Dr. Dre in their live show, which includes a full-band approach resembling Papa Roach's. "It doesn't sound jack like the album," T said. "The first response we get is absolute confusion. They don't know what's going on. It's a hip-hop show, but it rocks a lot harder. You know how MCs don't really bug the f--- out because they're concerned about keeping their cool and maintaining their rep. Well, I don't have a rep and I never will, so I might as well wet myself onstage and beat myself over the head with a cymbal." Little-T has been rapping since sixth grade, when he was first turned on to Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions. He teamed with One Track Mike while attending Rutgers University. "I lived in this dormitory for the freaks and rejects, the place where everybody goes when they scared to get the sh-- kicked out of them by the jocks in the other dorms," T recalled. "I heard about this cat who had computer equipment he could make loops and sh-- on. I snooped around and found out who it was. Even though he had long-ass air and looked like a hippie, I asked him to help me make a joint and named him One Track Mike. Basically, I was just exploiting his ass for computer equipment and it turned into a beautiful musical union." After playing a few shows in New York, the duo were asked onboard the Lyricist Lounge tour. They signed a record deal and hit the road with Outkast and the Vans Warped Tour. They will play a handful of dates with the Long Beach Dub Allstars. This report is from MTV News. |
