Though the announcement of Chris Cornell forfeiting his band's Ozzfest 2002 main stage slot has some metalheads raging, the tour is giving fans a say in remedying the situation.
A ballot has been posted on the
Ozzfest Web site asking for suggestions to fill the void, which opened when Cornell made public his decision to no longer work with the new, unnamed group composed of Rage Against the Machine members guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk (see "Chris Cornell Quits New Rage Project").
The choices include Ozzfest vets Slayer, Soulfly, Sevendust and Static-X as well as bands inexperienced with the annual metal trek, such as Foo Fighters, Nickelback, Tenacious D and Down, a group made up of members of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Eyehategod (see "Pantera's Phil Anselmo Gets Down And Dirty").
Voting is expected to continue through next week, and not all of the bands in the poll are available to make the summer trek, an Ozzfest spokesperson said. Other replacements are also being considered.
An official reason has yet to be given for Cornell's departure.
