Harbor when he lost control of his car and slammed into a tree. Paramedics removed the piano man from the vehicle and took him by ambulance to East Hampton Airport, where he was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said Joel was flown to the facility because it was unclear how seriously he was hurt at the time of the accident. The spokesperson wouldn't detail Joel's injuries, but said he was in satisfactory condition upon release.

A week later, Joel checked into a substance abuse rehab center in New Canaan, Connecticut (see "Billy Joel In Hospital For 'Personal Problem' ").
