After five years on ice, Lollapalooza will return this summer with a heavy-hitting lineup featuring Incubus, Audioslave, Queens of the Stone Age, Jurassic 5 and festival founders Jane's Addiction, a spokesperson for the tour said Friday.
The
DNA from which '90s alternative rock festivals were cloned, Lollapalooza should provide some stiff competition for the Summer Sanitarium Tour announced a day earlier and featuring Metallica, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park (see "Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Metallica To Launch Joint Tour").
Though Queens and Incubus are newcomers to Lollapalooza, Jane's Addiction headlined the inaugural tour in 1991, and Audioslave singer Chris Cornell's former band, Soundgarden, played the festival in 1992 and 1996.
Members of all five bands will be on hand at Ameoba Music in Hollywood on Monday for a press conference announcing details of the tour. Dates, venues and additional acts will be announced soon, the spokesperson said.
The tour's organizers have attempted to revive the festival several times over the past three years to no avail, citing a lack of headliners or sufficient time to secure a bankable lineup (see "Perry Hits Lollapasnooza Button: Tour Sleeps Another Year").
Co-founded by Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, Lollapalooza was molded after such long-running English festival as Glastonbury and Reading. In addition to bills packed with huge names — Nine Inch Nails, Beastie Boys, Hole, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica — Lollapalooza featured tents with everything from roving movie festivals to raves, political action information and body manipulation booths.
Though Lollapalooza has been dormant since 1997, the tour inspired a number of successors that will be competing for fans' dollars this summer. Ozzfest is expected to announce its plans soon, and the Vans Warped Tour has already laid out an ambitious slate of dates featuring Simple Plan, Rancid, the Used, AFI and Pennywise (see "Warped Tour Dates Announced, 17 More Bands Added").
