Amid the controversy over their weekend nuptials, Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have admitted that they're not legally wed ... yet. While Us Weekly claims in its next issue that the couple's wedding on Saturday was faked, Spears
"I know we're not completely legal until we file the license," Spears told People, "but in a real sense, in a spiritual sense, we're married ... I believe you also marry in your heart and that means much more than a piece of paper. If I don't feel it there, then nothing else matters. You can write anything down on paper, but the real truth is love. We know we have that." The couple said that while things became complicated with their paperwork once they moved up their wedding date (see "Britney's Big Day: Spa Treatments, Sweat Suits And Secrets"), they did manage to complete the prenuptial agreement. "It's done," Federline told People. "The details aren't anyone's business. But it wasn't any big deal. However, after finishing, we were advised to wait a certain grace period before filing the license. I think that's the law. And because of those conditions, we have to wait. ... Basically, those reports that we didn't legally wed are bullsh--. But it doesn't bother me, those reports. More important, this was such a spiritual connection for us, the wedding was. No piece of paper can capture what I feel." Us Weekly claims that when Spears and Federline weren't ready with their prenuptial agreement, they decided to plunge ahead anyway, so that they could honor a separate agreement with People to provide them with exclusive photos of a wedding, and also to avoid a media storm at what would be their real wedding on October 16. The magazine cites documents it obtained which purport to be the couple's agreement to hold a "faux wedding ceremony" as well as a draft of the prenuptial agreement. The Us Weekly cover is emblazoned with the headline "Did She Fake Her Wedding?" "I'm really upset that somebody someplace decides to write a false headline about a special day that I've dreamed about since I was a little girl," Spears told People. "It's too bad. I don't understand the thinking behind it." This report is from MTV News. |
