Yard spokesperson told the paper that police went to the hotel shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday evening, following "a report of a man being assaulted." While a police spokesperson confirmed that an arrest had been made in connection with the incident, he did not confirm the identity of the detained person.

The man — whom several British media outlets are reporting is Doherty — was also charged with suspicion of theft.

Max Carlish, the alleged victim, told The Guardian that he had been treated for two black eyes and a broken nose. Doherty reportedly accused Carlish of selling pictures of the self-confessed drug addict "smoking heroin" to newspapers.

Carlish told the Daily Mirror that he and Doherty were in a hotel, and that "everything was going fine until he started demanding loads of cash. He wanted thousands, and I knew he was going to go out and spend it on heroin. He was desperate for a fix. I said 'No,' and he went berserk, punching me."

Doherty, who has been romantically linked to supermodel Kate Moss, was kicked out of the Libertines last year and subsequently formed his current band, Babyshambles (see "Courtney Love Tame By Comparison To U.K.'s Libertines In 2004"). In 2003, he spent six months in jail for burglarizing the home of former Libertines bandmate Carl Barat, and was handed a four-month suspended jail sentence this fall for an unrelated weapons-possession charge.
