Andrew McMahon, singer for punk piano balladeers Something Corporate, has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia and is being treated at a Los Angeles-area hospital, according to a statement released by his publicist. At the time of his
McMahon's doctors expect him to make a full recovery from the disease, which, according to the National Cancer Institute, is the most common type of leukemia in young children and adults over the age of 65. Treatment methods include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and bone marrow transplantation, though it was not clear what type of treatment McMahon was undergoing. When MTV News caught up with McMahon in March at the South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas, he had just wrapped up a year and a half of touring with Something Corporate but was itching to take Jack's Mannequin out on the road. "We've been enjoying playing dive bars," he said of his side project. "I think we're going to play the Promenade [outdoor mall] in Santa Monica as street musicians, to have fun with it and use it as an opportunity to go backwards a bit," he said. "Something Corporate has a few thousand kids at every show, and this is a way of experiencing the feeling of being in an intimate club and getting a [look at another] side of what I really love about being a musician." Everything in Transit, which will hit stores in August, was recorded in bits and pieces between Something Corporate gigs and documents McMahon's wild times on the road and the way people and places change when you've been away from home for so long. "Basically, the album came out of finally returning home and seeing how much it changed since I'd left. Something Corporate started while we were in high school, and we got signed the year after I graduated. So I got on the road immediately. And this record is about coming home," McMahon said. "I wanted to do something that read like a story. I came home and just started writing. I wrote the first track for it back in December, and when [Something Corporate] took a break, I decided to embrace it. This record didn't take long to record. As corny as it sounds, it actually took a lot longer to live." This report is from MTV News. |
