Together, they've sold more than 9 million records in the U.S. alone and have a string of hit singles that would stretch from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Oregon. So you'd think that if the Foo Fighters and Weezer were planning on going on tour
together, they'd want the record-buying public to know about it.
Well, it turns out they are hitting the road together (management for both acts have confirmed it), but it's the details that are proving difficult to come by.
And it's not like Foo frontman Dave Grohl hasn't tried his hardest to spread the news, making passing mention of a tour during an interview with MTV News back in May (see "Foo Fighter Dave Grohl Says Physical Graffiti Was Model For New LP") and then making a full-blown statement about it on the Howard Stern show last month, even saying that the Foo/Weez road trip would start in September.
And then — presumably just to add more fuel to the speculation fire — British pogo-punkers the Kaiser Chiefs posted on their Web site that they'd been asked to join both bands on the road in September, something they repeated when MTV News caught up with them this past weekend at the Oxegen music festival in Naas, Ireland.
"Dave Grohl is a fan of the Kaiser Chiefs. His favorite album of the year is [our debut] Employment, apparently," Kaiser Chiefs drummer Nick Hodgson said. "So we met with him and he asked us to tour the States with him. We were going to get asked by Weezer — we were going to go on their tour — and then someone decided to have them tour together. So now we'll be on tour with both of them by some stroke of luck."
The Kaiser Chiefs' publicist confirmed that the band will open on the tour from September 29 to October 11, but the group's spokesperson couldn't say exactly when or where the tour would begin.
The Kaiser Chiefs have a string of U.S. dates lined up for the end of July, including a slot on Lollapalooza, happening July 22-23 in Chicago, coincidentally, alongside Weezer (see "Weezer, Killers, Pixies, Dashboard Confessional On Board For Lollapalooza"). Weez only have one confirmed date in September — on the 24th in Curitiba, Brazil — while the Foos are booked on the U.K. festival circuit until the end of August. But whenever and wherever all the bands do join forces, Grohl is super-pumped for the team-up.
"I can't wait. I love Weezer, I always have," he said. "I think it'd make a good match, the both of us in a big joint, having everyone singing with us. It'd be awesome."
