Sultry tunes always have a way of turning your head, and from Bow Wow (who's Lil' no more) to Jaguar Wright (who's always been larger than life) there's some sweet summer love being made around here this week. Elsewhere you'll find some far-out
Bow Wow -- "Let Me Hold You" It's always nice to help others, and when the boy/man chats up his Scorpio shortie in this slow jam, he says he wants to introduce her to "the better side of life." Sweet. If she agrees they could hit the mall, sex it up, get some new rims, sex it up, cuddle over coffee, and then sex it up. Thanks to some Jermaine Dupri grooves, we've got a track that makes a mild come-on seem way, way carnal. Makes you wonder why Omarion's along for the ride. Sufjan Stevens -- "Chicago" Stevens has taken on a truly impossible task: writing an album about each of the 50 states. The centerpiece to Illinoise creates a wall of sound that bolsters the singer's sorrowful lyric with both a children's choir and kettle drums. Feist -- "One Evening" If you're looking for a three-minute soundtrack to a balmy summer breeze, it's here. Using a well-sculpted series of whispers, the Canadian singer creates a kinda/sorta bossa nova feel with echoes of the '60s sprinkled all over. What if Sade was an indie popster? Queens of the Stone Age -- "In My Head" Not part of any "movement," the Queens are America's most underrated rock band. This charging riff-fest finds boss Queen Josh Homme try to shake a lover's memory while guitars pound like a bad migraine. John Prine -- "Crazy As a Loon" Career frustrations are everywhere for the guy singing this song. Auditioning in Hollywood hurt his feelings, pushing a broom in Nashville drove him nuts, getting downsized in New York broke his heart. Along the way the steel guitar and accordion ease the pain. And so does the place he winds up: a Canadian lake at midnight. DJ Format -- "Separated at Birth" This U.K. spinner is an old school fool who loves the fatback beats and flute samples. This hook-up with Jurassic 5's Chali 2Na and Akil is infectious stuff, all teasing lyrics and rhythmic curve balls. Jaguar Wright -- "My Place" Forget the headaches of the club. Back home champagne is served, the kitchen is well-stocked, and the bedroom is right down the hall. The Philly singer puts out an invitation few could refuse; every beat of the groove brings you closer to her front door. Take off that shirt and sit down on that couch. Iggy Pop and Kate Pierson -- "Candy" If you're looking for raw power, stick with the Stooge tracks on the new A Million in Prizes comp. But this sweet 1990 duet with the B-52 shows there more to the Igster than volume and a sizable johnson. Groundtruther -- "Transit of Venus" Hip-hop culture invaded jazz a few years ago, but the initial results were kind of lame. This wordless excursion is just the opposite: as mutated guitars and dub drums tumble down a cliff, DJ Logic tries to save them with some sampled-out scratching. Ol' Dirty Bastard -- "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" Big Baby Jesus' final kiss-off is inspired lunacy -- a cover of the old Elton John/Kiki Dee duet with Macy Gray. Of course, this being ODB, most of what he actually says is unprintable on a family web site. |
