Kelly Clarkson is hitting the road this summer, but she wants to make sure she doesn't hit it too hard.

"Touring does so much damage to the Earth, and that's one of my favorite things to do," the singer said. (We assume she means the

touring, not the damage — though can't you just picture her scorching up stadiums when she belts her new single, "Never Again"?) Clarkson quickly clarified: "I'm really into the whole environment thing, so we're always thinking of ways to conserve energy and just do things in a different way and figure out how you can go about it."

That's why Clarkson is kicking off her 36-city tour with an appearance at the U.S. version of Live Earth on July 7 at New Jersey's Giants Stadium (see "Kanye, Fall Out Boy, Kelly Clarkson Lead Live Earth's U.S. Lineup"). "Al Gore is one of the people backing this," she said, "and a bunch of people brought [Save Our Selves - The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis] to my attention. It's such a cool thing. It's kind of like Live 8."

After Live Earth, Clarkson crosses the country to start her main trek, which begins July 11 in Portland, Oregon, and continues through September 26 in Los Angeles (tickets go on sale May 12). While she promises to play all her previous hits, she'll also be showcasing new songs such as "Sober" and "Yeah" from her forthcoming album My December, due this summer (see "Kelly Clarkson On Her Revealing New LP: 'I'm Not Even This Open With Boyfriends!' ").

"I love recording in the studio, it's fun, but my favorite part by far is being out on the road," Clarkson said, "because there's no B.S. It's just me and my band. No one is in your ear about something stupid you don't care about. It's just you and your fans and having a good time. I can't wait."
