Noel Gallagher Plays Surprise Openers For Ex-Jam LeaderFinal acoustic show slated for Thursday (July 9) in Plymouth, England. by Staff Writer Chris Nelson |
In a gesture of megastar musician paying tribute to his rock
forebear, Oasis mastermind Noel Gallagher performed several unannounced,
acoustic opening gigs for one-time Jam leader Paul Weller this week. Gallagher launched into the first
"People were especially surprised that first night," Cotton said. "I spoke to somebody after that show, and before Noel went on, people were just milling about, getting drinks at the bar. Then when he walked onstage, people didn't instantly realize it was him. When they did realize, the place turned to madness." During his brief set, Gallagher performed the old Jam tune "Be Someone." Twenty years ago, the Jam's mod-rock laid the foundation for today's Brit-pop movement fronted by Oasis and other bands. Gallagher also paid tribute to another obvious influence by running through the Beatles' "Help." In addition to the covers, the set included Gallagher's own "Stand By Me," "Don't Go Away," "Wonderwall" (RealAudio excerpt), "Don't Look Back In Anger" and "Live Forever." The occasionally testy guitarist also opened for Weller on Wednesday in Bristol, England, and was expected to perform his final gig Thursday (July 9) in Plymouth, England, Cotton said. The shows were a natural pair-up for the two musicians, according to Cotton, who described them as "good friends." Weller and Gallagher's collaborations date back to 1995, when the Jam leader lent lead guitar and backing vocals to Oasis' "Champagne Supernova," from the (What's The Story) Morning Glory? album. "Noel gets bored," Cotton said of his decision to do the gigs. "He's on holiday now and doesn't have many commitments." |
