Momus has taken to the road with the songs he wrote about customers who paid him $1,000 for each tune.

The British experimentalist's U.S. tour began Tuesday in Cambridge, Mass., and continues at the Troubadour in Los Angeles on Friday.

Dates are scheduled through Nov. 27 in New York.

Momus' Stars Forever, released in August, contains the songs Momus wrote about 30 patrons who paid him for the privilege. The songs are in a range of musical genres, including folk, rock and electronica, and are arranged in a style Momus calls "analog baroque," with Moogs and other analog synthesizers. For "Karin Komoto" (RealAudio excerpt), Momus wrote a pop song; "Akiko Masuda" (RealAudio excerpt) got a frantic dance number.

The $30,000 raised by the album will help the 39-year-old singer's U.S. label, Le Grand Magistery, pay the costs from a lawsuit filed by transsexual composer Wendy Carlos, who objected to the 1998 Momus song "Walter Carlos."

"I like the record because it's taking me to a new place in my life," Momus (born Nick Currie) said in August. "It's been addressing all sorts of things, like what it's like to be an old man, what it's like to have a 3-year-old kid — things I can't write about personally. Other people have lent me their lives and their costumes, and I'm dressing up in them" (RealAudio excerpt of interview).

Kahimi Karie, a Japanese pop singer and Momus collaborator, will share the bill.
