Funk-rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers will mount their first extensive
U.S. tour in support of their 1999 album, Californication, in March. Foo Fighters will be the opening act for the tour, currently scheduled through May.
The trek will kick off March 24 at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The first legs of the tour will hit mainly college towns, with major cities such as New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle slated for summer and fall. "Otherside" (RealAudio excerpt), the third video from the double-platinum Californication, debuted Thursday on MTV. The dramatic clip, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight, Tonight"), features the Chili Peppers in a cartoonlike landscape reminiscent of director Fritz Lang's 1927 sci-fi classic "Metropolis." Though the Chili Peppers have not toured extensively in the U.S. for Californication, they have played Europe twice and recently did five shows in Japan. They're now in New Zealand, headlining the annual Big Day Out festival, which began Friday (Jan. 21). In May the Chili Peppers headlined a short U.S. outing aimed at high school students, and in July they played the final set of Woodstock '99 in Rome, N.Y. The festival ended in rioting and fires that burned out of control following the group's show-closing cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" (RealAudio excerpt of Chili Peppers version). Californication, which features a mix of the band's signature punk-funk and pop smarts, has spawned the radio hits "Scar Tissue" (RealAudio excerpt) and "Around the World." The group is nominated for three Grammys and on Monday won an American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Artist. Tickets for the tour will be available exclusively on MTV.com from Jan. 2628, and will go on sale elsewhere Jan. 29, according to Q Prime. (SonicNet is a division of the MTV Interactive Group.)
