Folk singer/guitarist Tracy Chapman is about to kick off a U.S. tour in support of her latest album, Telling Stories, released Feb. 15. The trek begins in Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday, and will hit 16 more cities on the way to
Chapman led a folk-music revival in late 1988, when sales of her self-titled debut, featuring the hit single "Fast Car" (RealAudio excerpt), took off with her widely broadcast London performance at South African leader Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday party. Her next two albums did well with her loyal following, but "Give Me One Reason," from her 1995 album New Beginning, lifted Chapman to the top of the charts. With Telling Stories, her first disc since 1995, Chapman's mournful voice accompanies her blend of folk, country and rock on such songs as "Unsung Psalm" (RealAudio excerpt).
