Saxophonist John Coltrane's albums The Avant-Garde, Coltrane Jazz, Ole Coltrane and Coltrane Plays the Blues have been remastered by Rhino Records and will be reissued this
summer.
The releases will complete Rhino's reissues of Coltrane's Atlantic back catalog. Giant Steps and My Favorite Things were reissued in 1998, and Coltrane's Sound followed in 1999.
"The only one we're not doing is the Milt JacksonColtrane record, which was John's first Atlantic date," said Patrick Milligan, director of A&R at Rhino. "The record really is a Jackson date, with Coltrane as a guest."
The new reissues will have staggered releases. The Avant-Garde and Coltrane Jazz will hit stores June 20; Ole Coltrane and Coltrane Plays the Blues are due Sept. 19. Ole features the track "Dahomey Dance" (RealAudio excerpt).
Coltrane Jazz will include alternate takes such as "Like Sonny" and "I'll Wait and Pray." Coltrane Plays the Blues features three alternate takes of tunes including "Blues to Elvin" and "Blues to You."
