Rising rap star Drama will begin a 90-day sentence Monday for a probation violation that occurred last year, before he recorded his debut album, Causin' Drama (Feb. 8).
"He's prepared to go," said
Zakiyyah Raheem, vice president of Tight 2 Def, his management company in Atlanta. "He's recognized it's for something in his past, and he's ready to get it out of his way."
The violation was discovered when Drama (born Terence Cook) was pulled over by police while in his car in February. Shortly afterward, the rapper was sentenced to 90 days in jail by the Clayton County Superior Court, though the sentence was delayed by a work release, according to Raheem. Court clerk Linda Miller would not give out details of the case.
Tight 2 Def did not have details about the violation and Tight 2 Def CEO Micaiah Raheem could not be reached for comment. Drama's lawyer did not return calls for comment.
The interruption comes at an inopportune time for the 18-year-old rapper. Causin' Drama hit the Billboard charts at #58 in February, driven by the catchy single, "Left, Right, Left" (RealAudio excerpt). The video for the album's second single, "Doubletime," will be released Monday, Raheem said.
The young rapper hopes to capitalize on his time in jail. Most of the material for Causin' Drama was written while serving a three-year drug-related sentence as a teenager. "He's already got material for his next album, so he'll be writing toward a third album," she said.
