interview

Dido always loved, and played music, but she also adored books -- and her dad was a literary agent. Which is how Dido, in need of gainful employment, found herself working at a literary agency, repping authors of "trashy fiction" and thrillers. But she soon learned that the real thrill for her was still singing. Click here to learn how she managed to leave the literary life behind.

Dido's brother, Rollo Armstrong, didn't mind having his sister hang out in the studio while he was putting together the first Faithless record but he thought she would just be making tea. Dido had something else in mind. "Faithless" would be an apt word to describe Rollo's initial estimation of his sibling's talent, but he soon changed his tune -- and pitched in to work on No Angel. Though Dido has claimed that much of her inspiration came from speeding around London in her Ford Fiesta and speculating on the lives of passersby, she admits some of her songs come from a place much closer to home, especially the sensual lyrics of "Here With Me." Dido's "Thank You" matches a sultry, mid-temp groove with a lyric about the one romantic ray of light in the harried life of a stressed city girl. ("I drank too much last night/Got bills to pay/My head is still in pain...") Eminem, who would seem like the most unlikely of Dido fans, appropriated the track for his current disc and turned it into "Stan," the ominous tale of a dangerously obsessed fan. Now Dido is saying "thank you" to Mr. Marshall Mathers. Click here to find out how the real Slim Shady helped boost Dido's career.

The concept for Dido's "Here With Me" video clip was about going behind the scenes to get a little to closer to the artist in front of the camera. Click here to learn how Dido and her crew got here -- and how double-sided tape helped keep things together.
