interview
Evan and Jaron have a plane to catch, and VH1.com has one last question to ask of the singing brothers. What's the strangest thing a fan has done to show their appreciation?

"That's an important question?" asks a bewildered Jaron.

"I don't want to single one particular thing out, because then I'll get these tons of emails tomorrow saying, 'How about me?'" figures his twin brother Evan. "We've had a lot of incredible fans -"

"A perfect example is when we were on the Rosie show," interrupts Jaron. "We must have gotten 200 emails from fans telling us everything about her. And all of our fans totally educated us on -"

"I don't want to sound like the cliché or anything," interrupts Evan. "But we have some incredible fans who've done incredible things for us -"

"And we've gotten special gifts from fans," Jaron concludes. "But I can't talk about it on TV."

Welcome to the 100 mph world of Evan and Jaron, two Atlanta songwriters who are finally capturing people's ears with the honeyed harmonies of single "Crazy for This Girl" and their self-titled new album. After releasing two albums themselves and the lost 1998 classic We've Never Heard of You Either on Island, it's a lot like starting over.

"I think we actually did a self-titled record for that reason," says Evan. "Our last three records were very important to us. They're very much a part of where we are, and we'll play songs from those records. We have a great fan base that has those records and knows those record and knows that Evan and Jaron. While at the same time it is a definite new step for us, it's still very much connected to our past."

Since their first gig at an Atlanta coffee shop in 1993 before 40 people, Evan and Jaron have slowly developed their individual approaches to songwriting. While Jaron prefers to write alone, Evan frequently collaborates, writing songs with Glen Ballard and Semisonic's Dan Wilson. Evan and Dan in fact essentially emailed each other soundfiles and wrote "Ready Or Not" without even meeting each other.

Although their stubborn approach to building and nurturing a fan base owes a lot to groups like the Dave Matthews Band and Hootie and the Blowfish, their own music isn't typical of a Georgia scene that's spawned everything from James Brown's hot pants to the Allman Brothers' Southern rock. They ain't Nelson, but the twins appreciate pop worth remembering. If you aren't crazy about them yet, prepare yourself. They'll get you.
