Citizen Scandal: Grand Theft Auto Saves Lives

by Anthony Miccio

You’ve all heard the stories about Grand Theft Auto inspiring young hooligans to carjack, murder and find secret sex codes. But it’s important to not lose sight of the positive benefits the ultra-violent videogame has in our society. If 11-year-old Audrey Plique hadn’t been playing the “M”-rated shoot-em-up, she wouldn’t have been primed to rescue her family from a car crash.

When the Plique family’s car flipped four times before landing in a ditch en route to Diamond, Illinois, Audrey knew she had to get them out of the car fast. “She just knew, from playing Grand Theft Auto. She saw on there that when a car rolls over, it can blow up. She knew that could happen to us,” said her mother, Karen Norris. Whether or not the car was actually in danger of exploding, the fear drove Audrey to escape through the back window while her parents and two younger siblings were still pinned inside. After getting her family free, she helped her father—whose glasses had been knocked off during the accident, find the highway and flag down a passing truck.

If it wasn’t for the lightning reflexes, quick thinking and hand-eye co-ordination GTA provided the young heroine, her family might have been stuck in that car for God knows how many minutes. Yes, some fans may become murderers. But others, like Audrey, become little cherubs of justice. [MyWebTimes]
