As one of the last artists to team with Michael Jackson before his unexpected death, Akon spoke with the Today Show‘s Meredith Vieira this morning about his personal experience with the King of Pop. They joined forces last year to re-record “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” for Jackson’s 25th Anniversary Thriller album. While their 2008 single, “Hold My Hand,” leaked over a year ago, the collaboration was being reserved for Jackson’s impending comeback album. Akon became emotional as they played a selection during the interview that included the now-poignant lyrics “This life don’t last forever, so what you waiting for?”
When Vieira queried about Akon’s personal encounter with Jackson, he spoke nothing but words of praise and admiration. Throughout their work together, ‘Kon said Jackson was very talkative, direct, and had an unmatchable work ethic. He also motivated Akon to be a better father through his consistent dedication to spending time with his children. Akon explained that Jackson’s motivation for the comeback tour was fueled by a desire to “show his kids what they’d been hearing about.”
