Naomi Sims, an African-American fashion model who appeared on several magazine covers in the 1960s and is credited as a pioneer in beauty on many levels, is dead at 61 years old. Naomi was the first black model to appear on the cover of Ladies Home Journal after getting her big break posing for the cover of the New York Times August 1967 fashion supplement.

Naomi was born in Oxford, Mississippi in 1948 and came to New York to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology on a scholarship. After being a powerful force in the “Black is Beautiful” movement of the era, Naomi left the catwalk and ventured out as an entrepreneur and author. [Source: Examiner; Photo: Getty Images]
