“Dancing With The Stars” Announces New Cast

“Dancing With The Stars” has announced the contestants for it’s upcoming season this fall and the cast is the biggest group yet. The group is a mix of young, old, athletes, musicians, models, a teenage witch and a House Majority Leader, sixteen contestants in all. And just to make things interesting, host Tom Bergeron has explained that there will be three weeks of double eliminations in mid-season. “It will be a ballroom bloodbath. In three weeks about half our cast will be gone.” While we sometimes joke that the word “Stars” is used loosely on these shows, in this case the group is in fact pretty star-studded, no air quotes needed. Let’s see who’s joining the new cast.

  • Kathy Ireland: The Sports Illustrated swimsuit model turned clothing designer and children’s book author recently gained 25 pounds and then wrote a book about how to lose it. An all-dance exercise routine will help keep her in shape, for sure.
  • Ireland won’t be the only pretty face on the dance floor either, model Joanna Krupa who has been voted Maxim‘s sexiest woman in the world, will also be competing.
  • Mya, who has been out of the limelight for the past couple years, will make her comeback on the show. The singer has been recording overseas, but this will be her first U.S. gig in two years.
  • We have a soft spot in our hearts for The Chairman, the host of Iron Chef America. His delivery of the secret ingredient, his occasional backflip: what’s not to love? We look forward to getting to know him in real life too (we never even knew his name, Mark Dacascos, until now) and watching him work off those heavy meals he gets to eat in Kitchen Stadium.
  • Will Macy Gray, who hasn’t had a hit since the nineties, make an impression on a new generation of fans? “I try,” she says (hypothetically, quoting her own song).

  • Ashley Hamilton is famous for two things. 1. Being George Hamilton‘s son and 2. Marrying Shannen Doherty for five months. If Hamilton proves to have some moves, he can add one more thing to that list.
  • Aaron Carter has also signed on to¬† the show. Like Ashley Hamilton, he’s known for his famous relative (brother Nick) and his relationships (Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan), so will dancing get him out from behind those shadows?
  • Melissa Joan Hart, whose career has taken a backseat to motherhood these past few years, will also be participating. Hart was offered a spot on the show last year but had to decline because of her pregnancy.
  • Kelly Osbourne is all over the place, but the one thing we never figured her for was a dancer. This could either be an expletive-filled train wreck or a delightful surprise.
  • Speaking of expletives, Debi Mazar is also joining the show. Mazar is a pop-culture chameleon, having been in some of Madonna’s earliest videos, popping up in serious films like Goodfellas, and starring on “Entourage” as Vince’s foul-mouthed PR flack. Originally a dancer by trade, Mazar might have an edge here.
  • Olympic champ Natalie Coughlin is staying in shape in her down time, too, but she’s not the only athlete of the bunch. Football player Michael Irvin, snowboarder Louie Vito and ultimate fighter Chuck Liddell will also be on the show. Whose athletic prowess will translate the best on the dancefloor?
  • Donny Osmond is not one to be outdone, especially by sister Marie who was a DWTS favorite. Yet another ploy in the Osmond’s grand scheme to never leave the American consciousness.
  • And no show would be complete without a total random pick (paging Steve Wozniak…). This season we’re getting former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. Sure.
