Mo’Nique has been a prime contender for next year’s Best Supporting Actress Oscar since winning the Jury Prize at Sundance for her upcoming film, Precious, in January. So why hasn’t she been promoting the film’s November release? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mo’Nique is backing out of appearances (including one at the upcoming NY Film Festival) because they’re not paying her enough to do them. With her new publicist quitting out of frustration after only two weeks, it looks like no one might grease the wheels needed to make the Academy turn in her favor – least of all, her.
But does Mo even care? With her new BET talk show kicking off next week, she may feel her time is worth more on set. “It’s just supporting actress. It’s not lead, is it?” cracked her rep to the Reporter, suggesting the golden boy might not matter as much to her as it did to Eddie Murphy, who stormed out of the ceremony after losing Best Supporting Actor for Dreamgirls in 2007. Besides, with Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry as Executive Producers, this film is destined to get her attention even if she never speaks of it again.
