The case against two Bahamians accused of trying to blackmail John Travolta after the death of his teenage son Jett has ended in a mistrial after a local politician announced their acquittal before the jury had delivered a verdict. “This came out of the clear blue. This was so weird,” said one of Travolta’s lawyers.
Politics likely played a major part in the chaos. Defendant Pleasant Bridgewater, enlisted by a paramedic to help him hit up Travolta for hush money after Jett’s death, was a prominent local senator before her arrest, with members of her party voicing support throughout the trial,. The jury appeared deadlocked after several hours of deliberation, and one of the jurors may have contacted the politician who then prematurely announced her acquittal. Considering the drama inherent in a battle between a popular local politician and a foreign superstar, it remains uncertain whether the case will be retried. But according to Travolta’s lawyer, the star “wants to know more.”
