Hey, you know what’s awesome? When American Idol goes over by two minutes and you don’t get to hear the judges tell a contestant who just “sang for his life” whether or not he earned the Judges’ Save. Did this happen to anyone else? By now we know that despite Michael Lynche (of that favorite family singing group The Lynche Mob) being the lowest-vote-getter, the judges unanimously voted to keep him on for another week. Ironically, just before the show, we said that the top performers this season that we expected to make it furthest were Lynche, Crystal Bowersox and Casey James, so we were shocked to see Michael at the bottom (there must be some real “Eleanor Rigby” purists in America after all).
The Judges’ Save was about the only good and interesting thing to happen on the show, unfortunately. First off, if there was any doubt that the group song was lip-synched, this episode put that to rest: it most definitely is. Siobhan Magnus might be great at hitting high notes, but fake singing a Beatles’ medley into a microphone is definitely not her bag. In addition to enduring the group song (which, in recent weeks, we’ve taken to outright ignoring), we also had to sit through Jason Derulo, a Kara DioGuardi-signed artist who we’ve never heard of but who needed pyrotechnics to distract us from his music. It must’ve taken every ounce of strength that Simon Cowell has to lie through his teeth to compliment that performance. David Archuleta made us also sit through a version of “Imagine” that was so tedious, we wish we still had our taxes to do to distract us from it. Finally, there was Rihanna, who has proven to us that she, much like Tim Urban, is essentially just an intriguing haircut with limited musical talents (and, unlike Tim, clad in a Catwoman outfit).
So no one went home this week, but two people will be ousted next week which is also the week that Adam Lambert makes his triumphant return. The plot, she’s thickening! So here are our standings based on tonight’s surprising and unusual voting.
9. Michael Lynche (-2 from last week)
8. Andrew Garcia (-3)
7. Tim Urban (+2)
6. Aaron Kelly (-2)
5. Lee DeWyze (-2)
4. Siobhan Magnus (+2)
3. Katie Stevens (+5)
2. Crystal Bowersox (-1)
1. Casey James (+1)
